Life and career

Horan was born in Darby, Pennsylvania, and Robert J. Horan, a courthouse officer, and Selma (née Spencer), a clerk, and Robert J. Horan, a courthouse officer. She graduated from Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School for Girls in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1980. She studied at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, earning a degree in Theater Performance in 1984. She then migrated to New York City, where she appeared in off-off Broadway theatre while working as a Telecharge telephone sales agent. While attending Hofstra, she met her future husband, Philip Rosenthal, who was executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond, and she converted to Judaism before their marriage in 1990.

On the CBS-TV sitcom series Everybody Loves Raymond, Horan is perhaps best known for her appearance in Amy McDougall (later Barone), Robert Barone's off-on again girlfriend, then wife. Horan appeared in 66 episodes of the series, making her first appearance in "Who's Handsome?" (Season 1, episode #14). She and her husband and their two children now live in Los Angeles. Horan has appeared on Hot in Cleveland (Season 2) starring an Amish woman, and she and her Everybody Loves Raymond co-star Patricia Heaton reunited in 2017 when she appeared on a Season 8 episode of The Middle in Cleveland. Some Feed Phil, her husband's travel/food show, had her appearance in her husband's travel/food exhibition.

Her maternal grandfather, who was Jewish, was a migrant. Horan is a Democrat.
