He was discovered after participating in the 1990s televised singing competition "Ikaw at Echo," a portion of the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga. On GMA Network, where he competed as a voice-a-like of Air Supply's Russell Hitchcock. Despite winning the title, he gained a following. He and his brother, Mylo Yonting, formed 'The Draybers' in 1996 and joined Rockstar: Bakit?, a sing-alike television show.

Yonting pursued a career as a comedian on GMA Network's Ful Haus, and the comedy sketch show H3O: Ha Ha Ha Over aired on QTV (now GMA News TV). He later became a regular host in Eat Bulaga. However, this time was short-lived, and he wanted to return to his band.

Later on, he and his band travelled all around the world. They went from many countries around the world, including Japan, where they met his wife, to various Filipino countries. The band returned to Manila in late 2011 and appeared in Resorts World Manila.

Mitoy was invited to attend the first season of The Voice of the Philippines in 2013. During the blind auditions, he sang "Bakit Ako Mahihiya" of Didith Reyes. Bamboo Maalac and Lea Salonga, who got excited after hearing his name, have returned to their seats for him. Salonga requested that he perform a non-English song after he had finished his audition piece, and he responded by performing a Japanese song. Yonting then selected Salonga as his mentor. He was paired with Chien Berbana and performed "Alone" of the American rock band Heart during the Battles, a feat that was widely praised by both the judges and the show's followers. Salonga selected Yonting for the round after, citing his expertise and prowess.

Yonting continued to make waves in the competition during Live shows. He performed "Don't Stop Me Now" of the English rock band Queen during his first appearance in the Live Shows. He was saved after receiving 82.29% of the public's vote during that episode. Yonting appeared on Dulce's "Paano" against Darryl Shy who sang Asin's Balita. Yonting lost to Shy for the public's vote, but he won after he earned the highest marks of the accumulated coach's and public's scores. He was paired up against Radha on the first night of the semi-finals, where he performed "Against All Odds" of Phil Collins as an à la battle song. He performed "The Power of Love" by Jennifer Rush in the second night. Yonting was proclaimed as the Salonga's representative to the Finals at the end of the season. He performed his original song, "Bulag," after the show's success.

He performed Freddie Aguilar's "Anak" and his own song "Bulag" on the first night of the finals.
