Early life

Sharon Gamboa Cuneta was born on January 6, 1966 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Santa Mesa, Manila, to Pablo Cuneta (1910–2000), a former Mayor of Pasay who was the longest-serving mayor in the Philippines from 1951 to 1998, and Elaine Gamboa (1934–2014), the sister of actress and singer Helen Gamboa. Her early years were spent in San Lorenzo Village, Makati and then in their family home in Paraiso Street Dasmariñas Village, Makati.

Cuneta grew up listening to her dad's record collection. Her mother, Elaine Gamboa, was a Piano Major at the UST's Conservatory of Music in her youth, the young Sha-Sha would take up piano, guitar, flute and piano lessons to broaden her musical training and exposure at a young age. At the age of three, Cuneta would accompany her famous Aunt Helen Gamboa during tapings of her television shows.

Another of her first proper TV appearances was on Ike Lozada's show, for the "Bulilit" portion, where she mimicked the songs of her aunt, Helen Gamboa. Cuneta was just as young when she appeared in her first movie, the Rosanna Ortiz – George Estregan starrer Lovers for Hire where she played one of Roderick Paulate's playmates.

Sharon Cuneta Career

Career

Sharon Gamboa Cuneta, a 12-year-old girl from Winnipeg, 1978, made her first return to 782 Aurora Boulevard, which was then Vicor Records' address. Tito Sotto, her uncle and Vice President of Vicor, begged her to record "Tawag Ng Pag-Ibig" which he made for her at Vicor, and shortly after, she was on television broadcasting her own song for the first time and on TVJ's television show Discorama hosted by TVJ.

"This is the show I watch every week," Sharon said on Discorama, where she said, "This is the show I watch every week." This is the show on which I have no idea how many hundreds of thousands or millions of people watch in the whole country. I couldn't talk when it struck me."

Sharon Cuneta performed "Mr. DJ" in May 1978, a Rey Valera song. Tito Sotto, Valera's producer, wanted to make a song that would be liked by the Radio DJ's and convince them to play her music on the radio.

"Mr. DJ" became a hit on television, and Cuneta was given the name of her debut album, "DJ's Pet" was also included. Cuneta's first Gold Record for this year, as well as her music company Vicor Records, came out with hit records like "Sharon" and "Sharon Cuneta," as well as "High School" with the same level of success.

"Naaala Ka," "I-Swing Mo Ako," "Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko" and "High School Life" were among Cuneta's more popular singles, which were also released during the Manila Sound era.

Cuneta began hosting with her aunt, Helen Gamboa, in a television variety show titled C.U.T.E. On IBC 13, call Us Two for Entertainment.

Boss Vic Del Rosario, Cuneta's boss at the time, gave her the opportunity to record her first George Canseco song "Tubig at Langis" in 1980. This was the theme tune of the film with the same name starring Vilma Santos and directed by Danny Zialcita.

"Langis at Tubig" was an official entry and had a float made for the Sinulog Festival the previous year. Danny Zialcita and Sining Silangan producer Ernie Rojas were the only ones there. However, there were no actors from the original film who were able to attend Cebu for this event, as the main protagonist, Vilma Santos, was pregnant at the time. If the teen Sharon Cuneta, who performed the theme song, could accompany them on the float, Sining Silangan demanded permission from Boss Vic Del Rosario. Boss Vic agreed and Cuneta, accompanied by her Mother, Elaine Cuneta, travelled to Cebu, was accepted.

Cuneta was invited to appear in a new film on the same day as the Sinulog Festival Float Ride at the Cebu Film Festival. Her parents then agreed to speak with Danny Zialcita. Despite asking for an outlandishly large sum, Silangan decided to pay the sum without reservation. "Ok po. po. "Ok po." Call. That was it. "If you would do this for me, I would make you a celebrity," Zialcita said. It was a promise made to her and it was a commitment." "The leading man came up." "Who would you like to be the leading man?" Direk Danny said. And my answer, not to mention Gabby Concepcion, was anybody but Gabby Concepcion. Gabby Concepcion was the only one able, as it turns out.

Cuneta appeared in her first film, Dear Heart. Gabby Concepcion, the 1980s heartthrob and Close-Up model and Regal Films' Gabby Concepcion, was paired with her. Dear Heart was a hit and opened the way for future collaborations.

A sequel was created in response to Dear Heart's commercial success. Mayor Pablo Cuneta collaborated with Vic Del Rosario and established Viva Films because Sining Silangan didn't have the means to produce a fast-moving film. P.S., Viva Films' first feature film, was released on November 12, 1981. I Love You, starring Cuneta and Concepcion. The film was a huge success in the box office and was followed by Another Sharon-Gabby collaboration, My Only Love (1982).

Cuneta had been paired with other influential guys, including William Martinez (in Forgive and Forget), Rowell Santiago (in Cross My Heart and Friends in Love), and Miguel Rodriguez (in To Love Again) from 1982 to 1983, which made her the Ms. RP Movies for the years.

In 1984, Cuneta paid three blockbuster melodramas: Sa Hirap at Ginhawa, Bukas, Luluhod, And Mga Tala, and Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin Ragudo. She was eventually crowned as the 1984 Box Office Queen of RP Movies, which culminated in her eventual crowning as the 1984 queen of RP Movies.

Including the year's Most Outstanding Female Concert Hall Act by Aliw Awards, Cuneta staged a sold-out major concert at the Araneta Coliseum titled Sharon Solo with the Boys on July 20 and 21, 1984.

Bituing Walang Ningning, the late Mina Aragon-del Rosario's pet project, was turned into a film directed by Viva Films starring Cuneta, Christopher de Leon, and Cherie Gil in 1985. The film was released on Valentine's Day 1985, and it was a box office success, crowning Cuneta once more as 1985's Box Office Queen of RP Movies and "Bida sa Takilya" the latter was awarded at the 1986 FAMAS Awards. "Megastar" was also given to her by the media in the '90s because of her continuing success in the box office.

Cuneta's string of hit movies continued in 1986: Nakagapos Na Puso (with Lorna Tolentino), Captain Barbell (where she appeared in a cameo role as Darna) and Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas (with Cherie Gil and Dina Bonnevie), the former Queen of RP Movies.

The Sharon Cuneta Exhibition, her first solo musical-variety show on television, premiered in September 1986 on IBC, becoming one of the longest running musical-variety shows in Philippine television.

Cuneta began dating her on-screen companion Gabby Concepcion while co-starring in films like P.S. ; the two continued co-starring in films like P.S. I Love You (1981) and Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin (1996). (lit.

(1984)

Cuneta worked with National Artist for Film, Lino Brocka, for the first time after her brief marriage to Concepcion, according to the film Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig. The film did not do well at the box office, but it did win Cuneta another Best Actress Award from FAMAS, which was encouraging. Cuneta did only do two films in 1988, Jack 'n Jill Sa Amerika and Buy One, Take One, both getting a skepticism from the public. On March 6, 1988, Cuneta's variety show was switched from IBC to ABS-CBN.

Although she was already in the Hall of Fame as Box-Office Queen in 1990, she was crowned again in 1991 and 1993 as a result of her films' success.

In three other films, Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin? Cuneta also reconciled with estranged husband Gabby Concepcion. (1990) Una Kang Naging Akin (1991) and Tayong Dalawa (1992), the latter receiving a Grand Prix Best Actress award from the Prime Minister of the Philippines, FAMAS, Film Academy of the Philippines, and Gawad Urian. In 1992, Cuneta received a Platinum award in 1992, a Double Platinum award in 1991 and 1992, and a Triple Platinum award in 1992.

Cuneta reunited with former flame Richard Gomez in the film Ngayon at Kailanman in 1992 and then with Kapantay Ay Langit in 1994.

Cuneta made a film outside her mother studio Viva Films in 1996 for the first time. The film Madrasta from Star Cinema is the first time. This film received her Best Actress Awards from all major award-giving bodies in the Philippines, resulting in a Grandslam Award for her outstanding role in the film.
