Michael William Day (born March 20, 1980) is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer.

Day, a resident of Orange County, California, studied theatre at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is a Groundlings alumnus.

He went on to write for several television shows.

He appeared on Saturday Night Live as a writer in its 39th season, became a top player in its 42nd season, and was promoted to a repertory player in its 44th year.

Early life and education

Day was born in Orange, California, on March 20, 1980. In Orange, he attended Panorama Elementary School and then graduated from El Modena High School, the same high school as actor Milo Ventimiglia. He served in the drama program and the student government. He produced comedic sketches for monthly assemblies and made the theme for his homecoming, "Batman." He also suffered with bullying while seeking asylum in theater. Day received a degree in theater from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Career

Day began his days with the Groundlings, a Los Angeles-based experimental theater company. Day and Michael Naughton wrote and co-starred in David Blaine Street Magic, a parody of magician David Blaine starring Mitch Silpa. The video, which was posted on YouTube, was one of the site's most popular videos.

Day was the first cast member of MTV's improvisational comedy series Wild 'n Out. He appeared in numerous scenes on the Groundling stage, including Groundlings, In The Study, With The Candlestick in early 2009 and the Groundlings Space Camp, he portrayed various characters. In 2006, Day wrote for Showtime's The Underground.

Day appeared in NBC's Kath & Kim remake in 2009, co-produced the Cartoon Network show Incredible Crew (2013), and co-produced Adult Swim's Robot Chicken in 2014. On The Jay Leno Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Day hosted a recurring segment parodying TMZ from 2010 to 2013. Day was a featured cast member of NBC variety show Maya & Marty, alongside Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, and Kenan Thompson. He also served as one of the show's co-head writers.

Day was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 2013 for its 39th season. Nasim Pedrad, a former actor who had worked with him before and was a cast member of SNL at the time, was recommended for the position. He wrote several sketches on SNL involving cast member Taran Killam and former Wild'n Out co-star Taran Killam, with whom he wrote the screenplay to Brother Nature (2016).

He was named a featured player for season 42 and was promoted to a rep repertory player at the start of season 44. He impersonated Donald Trump Jr. and SNL actor Kyle Mooney for his audition. Margot Robbie hosted his debut appearance in season 42's first episode on October 1, 2016. For the SNL's October 22, 2016, Bobby Moynihan, Streeter Seidell, and Day created the sketch "Haunted Elevator." Day played David S. Pumpkins, one of two dancing skeletons in the sketch. The sketch went viral, and he reprised his role in the David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special (2017).

Day and his writing partner Streeter Seidell have completed one project and have two others in the works for Disney. On November 12, 2021, the first of these, Home Sweet Home Alone, the sixth film in the Home Alone franchise, was released on Disney+. Pre-production of a live-action Inspector Gadget film is in progress. Walt Disney Pictures' SpaceCamp is also planned as a recreation.
