Masterson was born on Long Island, New York, the son of Carol Masterson, a director, and Peter Masterson, an insurance agent. Masterson, as well as his brother Danny Masterson, is a Scientology follower. Both the two chefs have invested in restaurants together. Alanna Masterson, a half-sister, and Jordan Masterson, a half-brother. Masterson was in a love affair with his brother's That '70s Show co-star Laura Prepon from 1999 to 2007.

In the sequel to Dragonheart, Geoff played Geoff in the direct-to-video film Dragonheart: A New Beginning. Masterson is best known for his role as Francis, Frankie Muniz's trouble-making oldest brother, in the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. He was in charge of seven years, from 2000 to 2006. In 2003, he appeared Edward Linton in MTV's Wuthering Heights. In the films Scary Movie 2, Waterborne, Made for Each Other, and Intellectual Property, Masterson portrayed a lead character. He and his brother, Danny, appeared in three episodes of That '70s Show.
