Gubler wrote and illustrated his first book, Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging, and Being Yourself, which was published on April 2, 2019. It's a children's book, but Gubler claims it's for all ages, "for those who didn't fit in right away" so they're aware that they are not alone." "every single word, every single illustration, including the bar code and the long copyright page," the author wrote or hand-drew everything in the book. The book debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list within weeks of its debut and was ranked #1 in its category.

The tale concerns Rumple Buttercup, who is so self-conscious about his appearance - green skin, five crooked teeth, and three strands of hair - that he is afraid he will be rejected by others, so he hides his life in a sewer. He appears only at night, clutching a banana peel on his head as a mask. Eventually, he finds that people actually accept him despite his differences. Gubler may be wearing a 7-foot-tall Rumple costume or a banana peel on his head in promotional appearances. He had intended to self-publish the book, but then discovered that Random House would be a good match for him at his first meeting: "The Random House publishers appeared to the meeting with banana peels on their heads, and I was immediately enchanted."
