Mike Zeck Career

Career

Zeck began his comics career in 1974, drawing illustration assignments for Charlton Comics' animated line of comics' text stories, which culminated in work on their horror films. During this time, he spent a short time in the Derby, Connecticut, area where Charlton was based.

Zeck began working with Marvel Comics on Master of Kung Fu, alongside writer Doug Moench in 1977. Moench and Zeck's work on Master of Kung-Fu ranked sixth on the "Top Ten 1970s Marvels" list in 2010. Zeck later served on Captain America and drew covers for G.I. Joe: A True American Hero.

In 1984, Zeck illustrated the Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars limited series. He created a new black-and-white costume for Spider-Man's brief appearance in this series. Venom, a Spider-Man villain, was born as a result of the costume's acquisition.

In 1986, Zeck collaborated with writer Steven Grant on a Punisher miniseries that was later published as The Punisher: Circle Of Blood and an original hardcover graphic novel of the character three years later.

Zeck presented the original Kraven's Last Hunt, written by his late Spider-Man collaborator J. M. DeMatteis, as well as the definitive Kraven the Hunter storyline.

"Because Mike nailed the plot elements so tightly in his pencils," DeMatteis wrote, "every move, every emotion was there, was a warning" — I didn't have to worry about trying to explain those elements in the captions or dialogue. I was able to do those interior monologues that were so important to the plot. It wouldn't have been the same story if any other artist had drawn "Kraven's Last Hunt";

Dynamic Forces' cover of Web of Spider-Man #32, which depicts Spider-Man escaping the grave into which he has been interred by Kraven, was recreated as a 12-inch tall resin diorama statue.

Zeck has worked for DC Comics as well. In the mid-1980s, he contributed to Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe. Zeck designed the covers for Batman #417–420 (March–June 1988), and the storylines were later compiled in a portfolio. Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Legends of the DC Universe, and Deathstroke, The Terminator are among his book credits for the magazine. He collaborated with writer Mark Waid on The Kingdom (illustrating issue #2, with Ariel Olivetti illustrating issue #1) in 1999, a sequel to Kingdom Come.
