Kazu Kibuishi Career

Career

At age five, Kibuishi began drawing. "The sadness that came from not seeing cool robot TV shows like Ultraman around when we first arrived in the United States caused a lot of my early drawings and projects," he wrote. He has also mentioned Garfield and the magazines Mad Magazine and CARtoons as triggers for his love of comic books in particular.

Kibuishi, a graduate of UC Santa Barbara, worked as an animator for Shadedbox Animations for two years. He decided to leave animation for comics, where he'd spend more time writing. Copper, the monthly comic stripe, was released on his website for seven years, but it came to an end in 2009.

Kibuishi planned Flight as an anthology with friend contributions. The project was on display at the Alternative Press Expo, where it caught the attention of Erik Larsen, the then-new publisher of Image Comics, when it caught his interest. The initiative caused the project to explode, attracting workers from all around the industry. Image released the first volume in 2004, and the anthology series came to an end in 2011 with the eighth volume.

Following the end of Flight, Kibuishi's anthology for children was published in Kibuishi, utilizing several of the same contributors to Flight. Explorer covered three books and then ended with Explorer: The Hidden Doors, which was seen as a successor series.

Kibuishi is the author of Amulet, a series of graphic novels that debuted with The Stonekeeper in 2008. Scholastic was granted the right to publish the collection after being successful in a fiercely fought auction. The Stonekeeper's Curse, The Cloud Searchers, The Last Council, Prince of the Elves, Escape From Lucien, Firelight, and Supernova are among the series's other titles. The series currently has eight books, with a ninth book set to conclude the series based on Kibuishi's previous announcements.

When editing Flight Volume 1, Kibuishi created Daisy Kutter: The Last Train, a Viper Comics book.

Kibuishi was asked to illustrate the covers for the Harry Potter books for inclusion in the 15th anniversary edition box set by Scholastic.

He also illustrated the story "?"

Machine of Death, a short story collection.
