Mike Tice Life

Michael Peter Tice (born February 2, 1959) is a former American football tight end and coach.

He played college football at the University of Maryland, College Park and spent 11 seasons playing in the National Football League (NFL) before spending 22 seasons as a coach, including four seasons as the Minnesota Vikings head coach.

Personal life

Mike Tice is the older brother of John Tice, also a former tight end at the University of Maryland, who played ten seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. John was an assistant coach for the Vikings in Mike's tenure. His son, Nate, was a quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers. During Mike's time with Seattle, his teammates referred to his eating style as "Mike Tice's Lunchout" in a humorous parody of the then popular video game, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Tice currently lives in the Seattle area with his wife, Diane.

Mike Tice Career

Playing career

Tice played quarterback at the University of Maryland, College Park. From 1981 to 1995, he played tight end in the National Football League, with the Washington Redskins, and Minnesota Vikings.

With the Class of 2013, Tice was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame on Long Island in the Coaches and Football Categories.

Coaching career

Tice joined the Vikings' coaching staff immediately after his retirement, first as tight ends coach (1996) and offensive line coach (1997-2001). For the last game of the 2001 season, Tice took over head coaching duties on an interim basis, replacing Dennis Green. Tice was named the 6th head coach in franchise history on January 10, 2002, with Bud Grant being ranked 2nd and 4th. He was the first male Viking to play the role.

For the first time in team history, the Vikings led the NFL in rushes in 2002, and they led the league in total offense for the first time in 2003. The Vikings broke team records with 6,339 total yards and 4,754 passing yards, as well as 50 touchdowns.

The NFL began investigating Tice for coordinating and profiting from a Super Bowl ticket scalping effort within the Vikings organization in March 2005. He later confessed to being innocent, and the NFL fined him $100,000 on June 30, 2005. At the time, it was the largest fine ever paid to a head coach in NFL history, but it is also the highest for a head coach who does not have the title or powers of general manager.

During the Minnesota Vikings boat party incident in October 2005, Tice was also the head coach. Some commentators believe that this incident caused his demise in Minnesota.

After the last game of the 2005 season on January 1, 2006, Tice's deal with the Minnesota Vikings was allowed to come to an end. The Vikings had just defeated the Chicago Bears, but the Vikings were effectively deadlocked from playoff contention after losing to the Baltimore Ravens. During his four years as the Vikings head coach, he had a regular season record of 32-33-0, while the Vikings' head coach went 1-1 in the playoffs. During his tenure, the Vikings also set the most consecutive games with over 300 yards of offense with 36.

Jack Del Rio, another former Viking, had Tice as Assistant Head Coach/Offense of Jacksonville.

Tice was hired as the Chicago Bears' offensive line coach on January 15, 2010. In one half of the New York Giants' offensive line, he allowed 9 sacks in one half. He sackled DeMarcus Ware, one of the NFL's most notable sackers since being drafted less than a year ago, on September 17, 2010. Despite this, the Bears gave up 105 sacks in his two years as offensive line coach.

The Bears named Tice as offensive coordinator on January 6, 2012, filling the void left by Mike Martz's departure.

After Lovie Smith was fired, the Bears hired Marc Trestman to be the Bears' new head coach on January 16, 2013. Aaron Kromer had been hired by the Bears to replace Tice as Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach, and Offensive Line Coach. On January 17, 2013, the Bears cut Tice.

In January 2014, Tice was hired to be the Atlanta Falcons offensive line coach.

In January 2015, Tice was hired to be the Oakland Raiders offensive line coach. Tice announced on February 6, 2018 that he was leaving teaching. He said he was willing to move into coaching because "players today don't want to be taught."
