Bud Foster Career

Playing career

Foster attended high school in Nokomis, Illinois. Foster, a 1981 graduate of Murray State University, was a strong safety and outside linebacker for the Murray State Racers from 1977 to 1980.

Coaching career

Foster began his teaching career at Murray State in 1981, Frank Beamer's first season as head coach. Foster was promoted to a full-time job after two years as a graduate assistant. He worked with outside linebackers for three seasons before being given over by the inside linebackers in 1986. He has also served as the Racers' recruiting coordinator and worked with special teams.

Foster went from Virginia Tech to Beamer in 1987, where he became the inside linebackers coach. For the next five seasons, he coached the outside linebackers. Prior to the 1993 season, Foster assumed responsibility for both sets of linebackers, as well as special-teams coaching. He coached the inside linebackers and special teams for the following year. Foster took over as the sole defensive coordinator in 1996 after being given the position of co-defense coordinator in 1995.

Foster was named as the 2000 American Football Coaches Association Defensive Coordinator of the Year after leading Tech to the national championship game (Sugar Bowl) in 1999. The 1999 defensive team of the Tech's led Division I-A in scoring defense and finished third in both total and rushing defense.

The Hokies' 2001 defense was one of the best in the country's best, ranked among the top eight teams in Division I-A in six different categories and leading the way in shutouts with four. Foster converted a defense that returned just three starters and turned it into a unit that led the Big East Conference in rushing defense, finishing 16th nationally against the run and tied for third in interceptions.

A battered metal lunch pail has been the pinnacle of Virginia Tech's blue-collar mentality on defense since the 1995 season. Each week, a series of goals are set in the lunch pail, and a player is selected to carry the lunch pail onto the sidelines. The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation was established to provide academic scholarships for students from the area near Blacksburg, Virginia.

Foster's defenses consistently rank among the best in the country. The following are Virginia Tech's defensive statistics since 1995.
