Jay Gruden Career

College career

Gruden was a four-year letterman for the Louisville Cardinals football team (1985-1988). He finished his collegiate career with 7,024 passing yards (as of 2013, the school's fourth all-time), with 572 of 1049 passes for 44 touchdowns. Both four figures now rank in the top five in Cardinals history. He also ranks in Louisville's top ten for yards per completion, passing attempts in a season, and completions in a season. He ranks eighth in career completion percentage, seventh in career passing accuracy, and ninth in average yards per game for the Cardinals. In a game six times at Louisville, Gruden threw for over 300 yards. As a senior, Gruden led the team to their first winning season in ten years.

Professional career

Gruden appeared in the World League of American Football (with Barcelona in 1991 and Scotland in 1995). He has also spent 3 seasons in the NFL (Phoenix) and CFL (Sacramento) on practice squads. Gruden, the Tampa Bay Storm's starting quarterback, has won four ArenaBowl titles. In 1992, he was voted the league's MVP. Gruden returned to the field in 2002 as a member of the Orlando Predators after stepping outside the field to coach.

Coaching career

In 1997, Gruden began his coaching career as the offensive coordinator for the Nashville Kats in the AFL. He took over as head coach of the Orlando Predators, the Storm's biggest competitor. He won ArenaBowl titles in 1998 and 2000 with Orlando. He came out of retirement and returned to play in 2002, this time for the Predators, but Fran Papasedero died in 2003, but he came back to head coaching when his replacement, Fran Papasedero, died in 2003. Gruden has a total AFL head coaching record of 93–61, with a record of 11–7 in the playoffs.

He served as an offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League from 2002 to 2008, with his brother, head coach Jon Gruden, winning a Super Bowl ring for the Buccaneers' victory in Super Bowl XXVII. Following the 2008 season, he left the team after his brother was fired.

He was selected to be head coach Jim Haslett's offensive coordinator for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League in 2009, when the Predators were on strike during the AFL's bankruptcy reorganization. He was not allowed to serve as the Predators' head coach as part of his employment. Rather, former Orlando quarterback Pat O'Hara, who led the team to its two ArenaBowl titles while Gruden was head coach, was hired in his place.

Following Haslett's departure to join Mike Shanahan's staff with the NFL's Washington Redskins, Gruden was named head coach of the Tuskers on February 20, 2010.

Gruden was hired as the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator on February 3, 2011. Gruden signed a three-year deal with the Bengals, even after being asked to interview for at least three NFL head coaching positions (with the Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams, and later dropping the Indianapolis Colts).

Gruden was interviewed by the Arizona Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, and San Diego Chargers for their open head coaching positions in January 2013.

Gruden's offense helped the Bengals win three straight Wild Card playoff appearances, including the AFC North championship in 2013.

Gruden was hired as the Washington Redskins' new head coach on January 9, 2014, after Mike Shanahan. Since Gruden was a highly sought after coach, Redskins owner Dan Snyder gave him a completely guaranteed, 5-year deal worth $20 million.

Gruden led the Redskins to their first playoff appearance since 2012. The Redskins will win the NFC East with a 9–7 record and finish the season on a 4-game winning streak. However, the Redskins lost 35-38 to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round, effectively ending their season. In 2016, the Redskins finished 8–7–1, but missed the playoffs. This was the first time the Redskins had back-to-back winning seasons since the 1996 and 1997 seasons.

Jay Gruden completed a two-year contract extension with the team on March 4, 2017. Gruden was fired on October 7, 2019, after starting the season 0–5, but his total tenure as head coach at 35–49–1.

Gruden was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as their offensive coordinator under head coach Doug Marrone on January 22, 2020. After the team finished with a franchise-worst 1–15 record, alongside Doug Marrone and the remainder of the team's coaches, he was let go following the season.

Gruden was hired as an offensive consultant and would work remotely for the team prior to the 2022 season. McVay and Gruden have worked together for years, beginning with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the University of Florida's Florida Tuskers before they both joined the Washington Redskins in 2010. Before Gruden became the Redskins' head coach, he served as both tight ends coach and offensive coordinator before moving to the Rams in 2017.
