Dirk Koetter Career

Coaching career

Koetter served as the head coach at Highland High School for two years (1983-1984), then went back to college in 1985 as the offensive coordinator at San Francisco State University. He taught at UTEP (1986–1988), Missouri (1989–1993), Boston College (1994–1995), and Oregon (1996–1997), after his time at San Francisco State.

Koetter served as the head coach at Boise State from 1998 to 2000, then moved to Arizona State in 2001. He was an All-West Conference champion and two bowl champions with two Big West Conference titles and two bowl victories, and was named Big West Coach of the Year twice. Koetter had a 40-34 (.541) record and four Bowl appearances in six years at Arizona State. The Sun Devils were named for a vertical passing attack under Koetter, who was also the offensive play caller. Koetter would have been suspended as Arizona State football coach by the Arizona Republic on November 26, 2006. On Christmas Eve, his last game was the 2006 Hawaii Bowl, a 41–24 loss.

It was reported on June 15, 2022, that Koetter would return to Boise State as an offensive analyst.

In 2007, Koetter was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). He had immediate success in his first year in the NFL, setting franchise records for both points scored and yards gained while assisting the Jaguars to an 11-five record. In five seasons with the Jaguars, the team finished third in the NFL in rushing yards in comparison to 2010's top rusher, Maurice Jones-Drew.

Koetter was hired as the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator on January 15, 2012. The Falcons signed Koetter to a contract extension that continued into the 2014 season on January 2, 2013. In 2013, Koetter and the Falcons appeared in the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 18 years, but the San Francisco 49ers lost 24-28.

In 2015, Koetter was recruited by the Falcons' division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers to serve as their offensive coordinator. Koetter was hired as the head coach following Lovie Smith's firing on January 15, 2016. The Buccaneers had high hopes for the 2017 season after posting a 9–7 record in 2016 and barely missing the playoffs. Despite this, Koetter and the Buccaneers failed to live up to those aspirations, falling to a 5–11 record. Despite regressing in his second year as the Buccaneers' head coach, the Buccaneers have announced that Koetter will be retained for the 2018 season. After another 5–11 season, the Buccaneers fired Koetter on December 30, 2018.

Koetter was recalled as the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator on January 8, 2019. Following the 2020 NFL season, he announced his retirement from coaching on January 22, 2021.

Koetter was hired to be an offensive analyst at Boise State University on June 15, 2022, and head coach Andy Avalos fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough and named Koetter as the offensive coordinator for the remainder of the 2022 season.
