Mike Portnoy Life

Michael Stephen Portnoy (born April 20, 1967) is an American drummer and singer best known as the former drummer, back vocalist, and co-founder of the progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater.

Portnoy revealed his departure from Dream Theater after 25 years in September 2010, with Mike Mangini taking his place as the band's drummer.

Portnoy has performed a variety of new bands and projects since his departure, including Adrenaline Mob, Flying Colors, The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, and Metal Allegiance.

Early life

Portnoy was born on Long Island, New York, on April 20, 1967, and grew on Long Island. Howard Portnoy (1940–2009), his father, was a DJ at a local radio station. After watching the 1971 film Play Misty for Me, Mike and his father went to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, to work at KRML radio station. His mother died on November 16, 1984, when her private plane she was riding in collided off the coast of Atlantic City with her boyfriend.

Portnoy's father's work inspired him to develop an appreciation for music at an early age, particularly because he had access to his father's collection of LPs, as Portnoy has pointed out. Rush, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Iron Maiden, and the Beatles were among his favorite bands. Portnoy claims to have been self-taught as a drummer, though he did take music theory classes in high school. He began playing in local bands, two of whom (Reigning Power and Inner Sanctum) recorded and released independent albums during this time.

Personal life

Portnoy and his partner, Marlene (née Apuzzo) live in Upper Saucon Township, Pennsylvania, with their children Melody Ruthandrea and Max John. Marlene used to be a guitarist in the all-female band Meanstreak, as well as guitarist Rena Sands and bassist Lisa Martens, are married to Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung respectively.

Max Portnoy, like his dad Mike, is a drummer. On April 6, 2013, his band Next to None opened in Atlanta for Adrenaline Mob. Max is playing drums in his new band Tallah as of December 26, 2017. He revealed that he is also the current drummer of the band Code Orange in a post on his official Instagram account on October 14.

Portnoy is a recovering alcoholic who has openly discussed it. The Twelve-step Suite's themes are based on Alcoholism's experience. After the final exhibition on Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory Tour in April 2000, he stopped drinking in April 2000.
