Early years
Davis attended Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he competed football and ran track for the Jaguars athletic teams. He rushed for 1,923 yards on 213 attempts for 21 touchdowns as a senior. Rivals.com ranked him as the seventh best running back recruit. Davis made an 11.84-second 100-meter dash in track & field. Davis had intended to attend the University of Florida but had to change his plans and attended the University of South Carolina.

College career
Davis played college football at the University of South Carolina from 2012 to 2014 under new head coach Steve Spurrier.
Davis rushed for 275 yards on 52 attempts and two touchdowns as a true freshman in 2012. Following Marcus Lattimore's departure, Davis took over as the starting running back in 2013. He ran for 1,183 yards with 11 touchdowns and was a second-team All-SEC (SEC) pick. He rushed for 982 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior in 2014.
Davis announced on December 25, 2014, that he would forego his senior season and enter the 2015 NFL Draft.
Professional career
Davis was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft on May 2, 2015, he was the 126th overall pick. Davis made his NFL debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 20, 2015, backing up Carlos Hyde who was forced to leave the field after being injured. He finished his rookie season with 58 passing yards and 38 receiving yards.
Davis scored against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 23, 2016. He finished the 2016 season with 50 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, as well as 25 receiving yards.
Davis was cut by the 49ers on May 5, 2017, after the 49ers refused to trade him during the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Seattle Seahawks granted Davis waivers on May 8, 2017. On September 2, he was released from the Seahawks' practice squad and the next day. On November 14, he was accepted to the active roster. He ended the 2017 season with 240 passing yards to go along with 15 touchdowns for 131 yards.
Davis re-signed with the Seahawks on March 22, 2018. Davis defeated the Arizona Cardinals by 21 runs for 101 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns in Week 4. Overall, he had 514 passing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 34 plays, 214 receiving yards, and one touchdown. In the NFC, the Seahawks received the #5 seed. In the 24–22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round, he had 32 scrimmage yards and converted a two-point conversion.
Davis was signed by the Chicago Bears in a two-year, $6 million contract on March 13, 2019. As the Bears lost to the Green Bay Packers by a score of 10–3, Davis ran five times for 19 yards and caught six passes for 17 yards in his first game as a Bear. He was released on November 9. In the 2019 season, he appeared in 12 games and gained 13 rushing yards to go along with seven touchdowns for 22 receiving yards.
Davis was released off waivers by the Carolina Panthers on November 11, 2019.
Davis was listed as one of the back-ups on the depth chart behind All-Pro Christian McCaffrey prior to the 2020 season. McCaffrey sustained an ankle injury in Week 2 and was put on injured reserve, putting Davis to the Panthers' back of running. During Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, Davis completed 111 yards from scrimmage and his first rushing touchdown of the season. During Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons, Davis went 149 yards from scramage and a receiving touchdown. In Week 14 against the Denver Broncos, he had 93 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Davis signed with his hometown Atlanta Falcons on March 25, 2021, a two-year, $5.5 million contract. He came back to the Falcons in the season, but Cordarrelle Patterson took over playing time as the season progressed. He was second on the team in rushing with 503 yards and three touchdowns, as well as 259 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Davis was released by the Falcons on May 2, 2022.
