Mikael Granlund Career

Playing career

Granlund played junior ice hockey with Oulun Kärpät in 2007–08 and 2008–09, scoring more than a point per game in both seasons, and was named a first-team All-Star in 2009. He made his first professional appearance in the SM-liiga on his 17th birthday, making his debut with Kärpät's team in the SM-liiga. He appeared in just two games before being embroiled in a labor controversy with the team. Granlund's four-year junior deal with Kärpät in 2007 was void because it didn't specify what compensation he would receive from the team and that the team had changed the date on his SM-liiga insurance application from April 2009 to April 2011 without his authorization. The team admitted mistakes were made but that they were made in good faith, because both the team and player wanted to bring him into the team's top team right away.

Granlund has signed a HIFK Helsinki contract for the 2009–10 season, despite his complaints that he was not obligated to move to HIFK. Granlund sued his old team in July 2009 after Kärpät refused to repent, forcing a judge to halt his employment with them and open the way for him to play with HIFK. Granlund was released from service a month later, and the two teams signed a deal allowing him to transfer to his new team. In 43 games with HIFK between 2009 and 2010, he scored 13 goals and 27 assists, leading all rookies in scoring with 40 points. He was named the winner of the Jarmo Wasama memorial trophy as the SM-liiga's top rookie, and he also received the Raimo Kilpiö trophy as the league's most gentlemanly player. In addition, Granlund was named Finland's Young Athlete of the Year in 2009.

Granlund has competed for both the Under-18 and Under-20 World Championships in 2009 and 2010. Granlund led the tournament in assists with nine aides, while his 13 total points helped Finland win its second straight bronze medal at the 2010 U18 Championship. With seven points as the team finished fifth overall at the 2010 World Junior Championships, he was Finland's top scorer with seven points.

Granlund was rated as the top European candidate for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the NHL Central Scout Bureau, among skaters. Though scouts had praised his small stature at five feet, ten inches, they were impressed by his ice's ability. The Minnesota Wild selected Granlund ninth overall in the Draft.

Granlund's employment was a success in the 2010-11 season, but he returned to HIFK for one more season. Granlund was out for over two months after suffering a concussion in mid-October, and as a result of the 2011 World Junior Championship, which prevented Granlund from participating in the 2011 World Junior Championship. Granlund, who primarily served as a playmaker, was a key role in helping HIFK win the SM-liiga tournament. Granlund came in second in playoff scoring (5–11–16), behind teammate Juha-Pekka Haataja (8–8–16).

Granlund made his debut with the senior Finnish national team for the 2011 IIHF World Championship in 2010–11 SM-liiga season. Granlund scored a lacrosse style highlight reel goal in the semifinal game against Russia, assisting Finland in winning gold. Granlund used the "Mike Legg Michigan style scoop" in a full-speed variation.

Dinamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) publicly proclaimed his playing rights in May 2011 because the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) drafted him one year before his selection by the Minnesota Wilds in May 2011. Granlund remained with HIFK through the 2011-12 season, owing to Finland's stringent military service service requirements. Granlund has stated that he was not keen on playing in the KHL but wanted to play in the NHL but not interested in participating in the NHL.

During the 2012 NHL off-season, Granlund signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Minnesota Wild. Granlund was assigned to the Houston Aeros, the Wild's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, ahead of the 2012–13 season with the NHL lockout postponement. Granlund was recalled from Houston and made the Wild's opening night roster after the lockout ended. He made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal against Semyon Varlamov of the Colorado Avalanche on January 19th.

Granlund's game improved during his sophomore season, scoring 8 goals and 33 assists. Granlund was transferred to Minnesota's top line midway through the season, where he was often paired with Jason Pominville and Zach Parise. Granlund scored a goal in overtime on Monday, leading the Wild to a playoff victory over Colorado.

Granlund made his Minnesota debut in the 2014-15 season, along with Pominville and Parise, where he scored 8 goals and 31 assists.

Granlund's second line on the Wild's second line in 2015-16 was characterized by a number of wingers due to Minnesota's struggles with injuries and line-shuffling. Interim head coach John Torchetti landed him on the first line wing with colleague Finn Mikko Koivu, sparking a sudden rise in points production, something Torchetti attributed to being pushed out of defensive duties often placed on centermen near the end of the season. He did well in the Wild's short playoff run, with Torchetti naming him the Wild's "best competitor."

The Wild re-signed Granlund to a three-year, $17.25 million deal, thus avoiding salary arbitration.

Granlund was traded by the Wild at the trade deadline to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Kevin Fiala on February 25, 2019 during the 2018-19 season, having scored 49 points in 63 games. He struggled to score goals in his first 16 games with the Predators; he managed to do so only once in that time frame.

Granlund told the Predators that he would not be re-signing and that he would test the free agency on September 29, 2020. However, he was unable to find a lucrative job elsewhere, and he would re-sign with Nashville on a one-year, $3.75 million contract on December 23, 2020.

Granlund re-signed with Nashville on a four-year, $20 million deal on July 28, 2021.
