Michael Leslie Winslow (born September 6, 1958) is an American actor, comedian, and beatboxer known as The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects for his ability to create realistic sounds using only his voice.
He is best known for his appearances in all seven Police Academy films as Larvell Jones.
He has appeared in Spaceballs, Cheech and Chong's Next Movie, The Love Boat, and Cadbury and GEICO commercials.
Early life
Winslow was born in Spokane, Washington, as the son of Verdie and Robert Winslow. He grew up at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane and later attended the Lisa Maile School of Acting, Modeling, and Imaging.
Winslow had few followers growing up, according to his own account. He'll imitate the sounds of engines, animals, flatulence, or anything that made noise as he gets to a later date. He appeared in nightclubs and theaters, where his sound imitating abilities earned him raves and allowed him to perform in Hollywood.
Career
His first television appearance was on The Gong Show, in which he squeezed in sound-alikes of Benji the movie dog, Star Trek, and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze." He is best known for his role as Larvell Jones in the Police Academy series of films and TV shows. After being seen opening for Count Basie, he was cast in the role. "I Am My Own Walkman" was released by Island Records in 1985. In Australia, the song reached the top of the charts at number 60.
Winslow received the Best Sound Effects Editing Award in 1986 for their documentary film Back to the Future.
Winslow appeared in the film Spaceballs in 1987, in which he does all the sound effects himself during one scene. Winslow saved the film money by doing so, according to Mel Brooks (who wrote, directed, produced, and co-starred in the film). Winslow is also a motivational speaker. Winslow has been hosting "Way Back Wednesday with Winslow" on cable television network WGN America, which features films that were not released in the 1980s. He continues to perform stand-up comedy around the world.
In 2010, Michael Winslow introduced his own iPhone and iPod Touch applications, bringing his sound effects and comedy to a smartphone audience. When the unit is in a combat mode, ThatsKungFu makes Winslow's kung fu combat sounds. NoizeyMan, the "World's No. One," features video, ringtones, sound effects, and mini games, which were all created by Winslow.
Winslow partnered with Orlando, Florida-based game design firm Phyken Media on a mobile game entitled Wizard Ops Chapter 1, which provided all of the game's sound effects. He also spoke about Wizard Ops Tactics, a turn-based tactical game and spiritual successor to the previous game.
During GEICO Insurance's "We recruited a celebrity" ad campaign, he was also featured in a commercial.
