Personal life
Kors was born as Karl Anderson Jr. on Long Island, New York. His mother is Jewish; his father was of Swedish descent. His parents are Joan Hamburger, a former model, and her first husband, Karl Anderson Sr. His mother married Bill Kors, when her son was five, and his surname was changed to Kors. His mother told Karl that he could choose a new first name as well and he renamed himself Michael David Kors. He grew up in Merrick, New York and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, New York, on Long Island.
Kors married his partner, Lance Le Pere, on August 16, 2011, in Southampton, New York, in The Hamptons.
Career
Kors' fashion obsession began when he was a child. His mother believes that his affinity might have been exacerbated in part by his exposure to the clothing industry through her modeling career. Michael, a 5-year-old boy, also redesigned his mother's wedding dress for her second marriage. Kors began designing clothes and showcasing them in his parents' basement, which he renamed the Iron Butterfly.
He attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1977. However, he sank out after only nine months and started a career at Lothar's across from Bergdorf Goodman in Midtown Manhattan, where he started as a salesman and moved on to become both the designer and visual display head for the store.
Kors launched Michael Kors' women's label at Bergdorf Goodman in 1981. In 1990, KORS Michael Kors was established as a licensee. A Chapter 11 filing in 1993, prompted by the demise of KORS Michael Kors' licensing partner, compelled him to suspend the KORS line. He was back on his feet by 1997 and launched a lower priced collection, while also being named the first female-to-wear designer for French house Celine. Kors turned the fashion house around during his tenure with successful accessories and a highly acclaimed ready-to-wear collection. In October 2003, he left Celine to concentrate on his own brand. In 2002, he introduced his menswear collection.
Nicole Kidman, Tiffany Haddish, Reese Witherspoon, Lupita Nyong'o, Joshua Wilde, Blake Lively, Katherine Jenkins, Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda DeBose, Michelle Watson, Margaret Zeta-Jones, Sigourney Weaver, and Ciara are among the celebrities to have adorned in Kors' designs. Michelle Obama wore a black sleeveless gown from the designer for her first term official portrait as First Lady and then sported Kors for the 2015 State of the Union address.
When receiving a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actress in a motion picture for her role in Fences, Viola Davis wore a custom Michael Kors Collection gown. Kate Hudson and Olivia Wilde wore designer gowns to the 2016 Golden Globes, while Emily Blunt, who was nominated for her role in Into The Woods, wore a white custom gown by the designer in 2015. When Joan Allen was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Contender, she wore his gown. Kors, the creative director of Celine, produced several outfits for actresses, including Gwyneth Paltrow in Possession and Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair.
Alicia Keys' gown was one of his gowns he wore for her appearance at Barack Obama's inaugural ball on January 21, 2013.
Kors served as a judge on Emmy-nominated reality television show Project Runway, which aired on Bravo for five seasons; subsequent seasons were broadcast on Lifetime. Kors will leave Project Runway on December 18, 2012, to be replaced by fellow designer Zac Posen. Kors returned to Project Runway in 2016 as a guest judge on the season 15 finale.
Forbes reported in January 2014 that Kors had a personal fortune in excess of $1 billion. Silas Chou and Lawrence Stroll were among Michael Kors Holdings' "minted two billionaires":
