Michael Owusu Addo, also known as Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur from Tema.

His contributions to the Ghanaian music industry have earned him numerous accolades, including the Vodafone Ghana Music Award for Artiste of the Decade.

According to e.tv Ghana, Sarkodie was ranked as the 19th Most Influential Ghanaian in 2015.

He is one of the most influential proponents of the Azonto style and dance.

Personal life

Life and career

On July 10, 1988, Sarkodie, the fourth of five children, was born. Before his parents moved to Tema, where he started training, he was raised in Koforidua. He attended Tema Methodist Day Senior High School and then moved to the University of Plymouth, where he earned a degree in graphic design. Sarkodie began his career as an underground rapper, appearing in Adom FM's famous rap competition Kasahare Level. While participating in the aforementioned competition, Duncan Williams, the former manager of Duncwills Entertainment, met him. In addition, Edem and Castro, who introduced him to Hammer of The Last Two, an established record producer, performed live. Hammer allowed Sarkodie to record two songs for Edems' debut album Volta Regime, being captivated by his rap flows.

Sarkodie's debut album Makye came after his collaboration with Hammer. Killbeatz and Jayso were mainly responsible for the production. Kwaw Kese, J-Town, Sway, and Paedae of R2Bees appear on the album. Critics and followers praised Makye's service. A festival held at Holy City Gardens in Accra was able to fund it. Sarkodie appeared alongside Busta Rhymes at the Busta Rhymes Live in Ghana concert on September 16, 2009. His "Push" and "Baby" albums were ranked ninth and thirteenth on Joy FM's Top 50 Songs of 2009. Mugeez of R2bees made the album's lead single "Baby," which gives Sarkodie a huge following and gave Sarkodie a huge fan base.

In 2012, Sarkodie's second studio album Rapperholic was released. It features guest appearances from Efya, Chidynma, Mugeez of R2Bees, Obrafour, Jayso, and EL. Five singles were featured on the album: "Good Bye," "One Time For Your Mind," "You Go Kill Me," "Life Legend," and "Onyame Nhyira." It has received positive feedback from music critics. Sarkodie performed on a national tour to promote the album. Sarkodie received his first BET nomination and subsequent triumph. Along with Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, and Ab-Soul, Sarkodie was also on the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher. He was the first African artist to be on the cypher.

Sarkodie began his tour of Canada on July 7th, 2012. In August 2012, he toured the United States, appearing in cities and states such as New York City, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, Atlanta, Texas, and Massachusetts. Sarkodie, the artist who first announced Rapperholic, went on tour to sell the album. Sarkodie appeared at the Africa Unplugged Music Festival on August 27, 2012, alongside R2Bees, Fally Ipupa, and Iyanya. Sarkodie performed "How Low" with Ludacris at the 020 Live concerts in 2012.

Sarkodie's official remix of "You Go Kill Me" was released on October 30, 2013. On various charts in Ghana, the song topped the number one position. Wizkid, Ice Prince, Navio, and EL have all recorded vocals on this remix. Sarkodie's third studio album, Sarkology, was released in January 2014. The album features guest appearances from Fuse ODG, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Banky W., Timaya, 2 Face Idibia, Efya, Mugabeez, Obrafour, Burna Boy, Burna Boy, Vivian Chidid, Vector, Silvastone, Rogue, Iman, Kofi B, and AKA. Magnom, Hammer, Killbeatz, Masterkraft, and Silvastone were among other things involved in its development. In December, the album's debut concert was held at Accra Sports Stadium.

"Adonai" was released by Sarkodie, who performed the official version. It features vocals from Castro and appeared on Capital Xtra's list of the Top 35 Afrobeats Songs. In 2014, Sarkodie's Sarkcess Music record label debuted. He premiered the video for "Adonai" (Remix) and "Special Someone" as part of the launch. "Megye Wo Girl," "Love Rocks," "Chingum," and "Whine Fi Me" were among Sarkodie's "Megye Wo Girl," "Chernium" and "Whine Fi Me" under the umbrella.

Sarkodie performed at the 15th edition of the Ghana Music Awards on May 3, 2014. He joined Miguel on stage on June 7th to perform "How Many Drinks?" from the latter's album "How Many Drinks." The MTV Africa Music Awards were distributed. Sarkodie joined Mi Casa, Lola Rae, Davido, Diamond Platnumz, and Tiwa Savage in June 2014 to record "Africa Rising," a song for DSTV's campaign of the same name. The initiative was designed to motivate Africans to partake in community-based social investment initiatives. On June 24, 2014, the music video for "Africa Rising" was released. Callback Dream, a South African production house, produced it.

Sarkodie's Ace Hood-assisted "New Guy" appeared on June 10, 2015, on the 10th anniversary of his birth. Sarkcess Music and Ivy League Records released it on June 10, 2015. "New Guy" is an African hip hop and hip hop album whose lyrics refer to Sarkodie's aspiration and admiration for success, written by the two artists and produced by CedSolo. "New Guy"'s production costs were paid in full in early 2015, when Sarkodie paid a total of $25,000 to cover the recording's expenses. Ace Hood's appearance was also important because he considers him "one of the world's most influential rappers."

Sarkodie released Mary, a live album based on his grandmother's death in 2012. "Mewu" was the album's lead single two months before being announced. At the West Hills Mall in Accra, an autograph session for the album was held. On the first day of its debut, Sarkodie's album sold nearly 4,000 copies. In February 2016, he spoke to a group of Harvard Business School students. His address, titled "The Art of the Hustle," was mainly about the difficulties of being an African musician. Following his address, Sarkodie performed at the festival.

On Christmas Day, Sarkodie held the fourth edition of his Rapperholic concert. Within 72 hours of its issuance, tickets for the event sold out. Additional performances from Fuse ODG, R2Bees, Wizkid, Samini, VVIP, Efya, and Shatta Wale were included in the show. Sarkodie performed with The Composers, a music ensemble, at the O2's Indigo venue on March 11, 2016; DJ Abrantee hosted the performance.

On September 8, 2017, Sarkodie's fifth studio album titled Highest was released. It contains 19 songs, including 3 interludes and a bonus track. The album, which was released by Sarkcess Music and Dice Recordings, features guest appearances from Jesse Jagz, Moelogo, Flavour, Korede Bello, Victoria Kimani, and Big Narstie. With additional production from Masterkraft, TSpize, Ced Solo, Nova, and Guilty Beatz, the best was mainly produced by Jayso.

In June 2019, Sarkodie debuted his extended play Alpha. Joey B and Ebony Reigns' guest appearances on the 6-track EP. During the Ebony Reigns concert, Sarkodie teased his collaboration with Reigns. On December 20, 2019, he released his fifth studio album Black Love. Mr Eazi, Efya, Donae'o, Idris Elba, Tekno, Stonebwoy, Maleek Berry, Tekno, King Promise, and Kizz Daniel appear on the show. "Party & Bullshit," "Saara," "Do You," and "Can't Let Go" were all included on the album. In a recent interview with OkayAfrica, Sarkodie said the album explores issues of black love and marriage. Sarkodie's new Studio Album, "No Pressure," was announced on April 19, 2021. In anticipation of what fans might expect from the album, a trailer video was posted on YouTube. However, Sarkodie's 2021 birthday announced a 5 days countdown of the album, which would be released on July 30, 2021.

On July, 2021, Sakodie released No Pressure, the album's second installment. Wale, Vic Mensa, Giggs, Cassper Nyovest, Harmonize, Oxlade, Kwesi Arthur, Darko Vibes, Medikal, and MOGmusic are among the album's performers.

Business career and endorsements

The Sark by Yas clothing collection, which was released on April 27, 2013, is owned by Sarkodie. The clothing collection has accessories for both men, women, and children. He was officially unveiled at the University of Ghana, Legon, in 2012 as the Brand Ambassador for Samsung Electronics. Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy Pocket and Chief Hero Phones with custom wallpapers of Sarkodie and his signature; as part of the case, users were able to download exclusive tracks of Sarkodie. In 2013, Obidi Chief headphones were unveiled and he had signed an endorsement with FanMilk Ghana. Sarkodie is currently in collaboration with Tigo Telecommunications Ghana, a company that sponsored his 2013 Rapperholic tour. Sarkodie is also a member of Standard Chartered Bank, Africa's top financial company, as well as Guinness Ghana Limited for their Malt drink product. He was named as an ambassador for the Year of Return campaign on October 30, 2019, the highest honour was given to him at the Creative Arts Industry Forum. Sarkodie and his little girl were included in Pepsodent Ghana's #BrushWithMe campaign in March 2021. The campaign was designed to compel parents and guardians to resume and promote a day-and-night tooth brushing schedule with their children. This was done to celebrate World Oral Health Day.
