Matthew William Goode (born 3 April 1978) is an English character actor.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, ABC's first film feature, made him his screen debut in 2002.

He made his debut in Chasing Liberty (2004), for which he received a nomination at the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Breakout Movie Star – Male.

He appeared in a number of supporting roles in films including Woody Allen's Match Point (2005), the German-British romantic comedy Imagine Me and You (2006), and the period drama Copying Beethoven (2006).

He's been lauded for his role in Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited (2008), as Charles Ryder in Julian Jarrold's adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited (2008), and as Ozymandias in the American neo-noir superhero film Watchmen (2009), based on DC Comics' limited series of the same name.

He also appeared in Leap Year (2010) and Australian drama Burning Man (2011), the former winning him a nomination for Best Actor at the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards. Other notable film roles include The Lookout (2007), A Single Man (2009), Cemetery Junction (2009), Stoker (2013), Belle (2013), The Imitation Game (2014), and Self/less (2015).

Goode was born in Exeter, Devon, on April 3rd, 1978. Anthony's father, Anthony, was a geologist, and Jennifer, his mother, is a nurse and amateur theatre director. Goode is the youngest of five children with a brother, two half-brothers, and a half-sister, television host Sally Meen, who was born in 1998. He grew up in Clyst St. Mary, near Exeter, near Exeter. Goode was educated at Exeter School, Devon's independent school, followed by the University of Birmingham and London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

In Inspector Lynley's "Under Pressure" film, Goode played Peter Lynley, Inspector Lynley's brother, and co-starred in Inspector Lynley's confessions of an Unconstitutional Vengeance, based on Gregory Maguire's book The Tempest and William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Goode made his American film debut in the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty, which also stars Mandy Moore.

Goode co-starred in Woody Allen's dramatic comedy Match Point, opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson, Ol Parker's romantic comedy Imagine Me & You, opposite Piper Perabo and Lena Headey, opposite Imelda Staunton, the biographical-musical drama Copying Beethoven, opposite Ed Harris and Diane Kruger, as well as Scott Frank's crime drama The Lookout opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Goode co-starred George Wickham opposite Matthew Rhys in the three-part BBC murder mystery miniseries Death Comes to Pemberley, based on P. D. Hugh Alexander, a British Second World War cryptanalyst and chess champion, appeared in the historical drama The Imitation Game in 2014.

Finley "Finn" Polmar, a state prosecutor, was a prosecutor on March 4, 2014. In the 15th episode, "Dramatics, Your Honor," in which Josh Charles' character was killed off, replacing Will Gardner during the fifth season. Goode left The Good Wife in May 2015 following the conclusion of the sixth season.

Goode co-starred in Downton Abbey's ITV drama "A Moorland Holiday" as Henry Talbot in 2014 and Downton Abbey's Season 5 Christmas special "A Moorland Holiday" as Henry Talbot. In the fourth episode of the sixth season, he returned to Downton Abbey in October 2015. Goode also appeared in the Downton Abbey film, which was released in 2019.

He appeared in many films in the mid-2010s, including in the 2016's Allied. In autumn 2016, he began to work on the WGN's production of the Roadside Picnic series based on the Strugatsky novel, but the pilot was postponed. The show premiered in the United Kingdom on September 14, 2018, and it has since been renewed for two more series based on the strength of its first airing in the United Kingdom, where it was always the network's most watched show each week for its 8-episode run. Goode appeared in The King's Man, Matthew Vaughn's film, starring Captain Morton / The Shepherd. The film, which was set in the 20th century and prefacing World War I, was released in December 2021.

The art deco pioneer (left) was commemorated 125 years after her birth at the flat at 20 Snow Hill in Shelton, where she lived at the height of her success. She married her boss, factory owner Colley Shorter, in 1940 after the death of his wife. The pair had engaged in a secret affair that never became the subject of gossip. Cliff was portrayed by Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor in 2021 film the Colour Room (bottom right). Shorter was depicted by Matthew Goode. The plaque was unveiled on Friday by arts and heritage minister Lord Parkinson following the return of the public memorial scheme, carried out by Historic England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It reads: 'Clarice Cliff 1899 - 1972 pottery designer and factory art director lived here.'
