Personal life
According to an interview with AOL Interface, Skiba is a vegetarian and practices Transcendental Meditation. He said that the clear and calm state of mind it gives has greatly improved his creative process, although he initially believed the "true soul" attitude was more helpful. David Lynch's book Catching the Big Fish prompted him to change his mind, and he now finds that a calm state is more artistically beneficial. "To me Anton LaVey was...very punk rock," Matt said of his membership in The Church of Satan group in the early days of Alkaline Trio.
Skiba moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 2001, but he now lives in Los Angeles. On his knuckles, he has the word "Love Song" tattooed on his chest. He is a "huge Cure fan," a "vast Green Day enthusiast" and a "really big Nirvana fan." Skiba has been divorced from the country. He is a close friend of Fat Mike of NOFX-fame and was the best man at his wedding.
Career
Skiba studied design at Columbia College in Chicago, but she left in 1996 to form Alkaline Trio with drummer Glenn Porter and bassist Rob Doran.
They released the For Your Lungs Only EP after the group performed their demo and the single "Sundials," a time when Doran left the band. On the EP, Dan Andriano appeared and played bass. On Asian Man Records in 1998, the band's debut full-length Goddamnit debuted, followed by Maybe I'll Catch Fire and the compilation Alkaline Trio in 2000.
When Porter was fired and former Smoking Popes drummer Mike Felumlee joined, the group's lineup changed again in 2000. Vagrant Records first introduced Here to Infirmary in 2001. A Hot Water Music/Alkaline Trio split EP was released by Jade Tree Records in 2002, which was well received. Both bands recorded original tracks and covers of each other's albums. Good Mourning debuted in 2003, marking the band's first album with drummer Derek Grant, formerly of Suicide Machines and Thoughts of Ionesco. Skiba had a problem with acid reflux during recording Good Mourning because of his diet, lack of vocal warm-up, and his earlier issues with alcohol and opioids.

Matt will still be doing Trio stuff, and I think he'll be on a fantastic solo album. I'm not positive, but I'm sure it'll be amazing."
