Matt McKay Career

Club career

McKay spent his formative youth years at both the QAS and AIS. McKay's first club signing took place in 1991 for the Sunnybank Saints Soccer Club, which is a member of the Queensland Christian Soccer Association. McKay was drafted by the Brisbane Strikers in 2001, where he continued until the 2003–04 National Soccer League season. In the Elimination Final #1, McKay's last game for the Strikers was a 4–1 victory over Adelaide United as the Strikers could only tie 4–4 and bow out of the finals on away goals.

McKay became the inaugural member of the Queensland Roar, then Queensland Roar, before the 2005–06 season, the first in the A-League's history. McKay was given the number 17 shirt, which he has wore during his time with the Roar. McKay's first-ever A-League fixture against the now defunct New Zealand Knights was initially signed as a squad player behind the more established South Korean duo Hyuk-Su Seo and Tae-Yong Shin. McKay was named as the club captain following Craig Moore's departure midway through the 2009–10 season. With 184 appearances and 21 goals, he has played the most games for the Roar, scoring 21 goals.

In 2011, McKay led Brisbane to their first A-League premiership and championship. With a stunning 4–2 (2–0) penalty shoot-out win over the Central Coast Mariners in the 2011 A-League Grand Final, the Roar led the table and extended their record-breaking 28-game (run finished at 36). After the match, it was revealed that McKay's inspirational speech at halftime in extra time boosted the Roar's morale enough to surpass a 2–0 deficit.

McKay, who was inexperienced at Brisbane Roar, had a loan stint in 2009 during the A-League off season. He joined Changchun Yatai F.C. He made 15 appearances in the Chinese Super League, where he appeared in 15 games.

Rangers announced on August 16th that McKay was waiting for a work permit, which was released three days later, and that a UK work visa was issued a week later. McKay made his Rangers debut against Dundee United on September 10, 2011, but he was forced to leave as a late replacement.

McKay played and scored in a 4–1 Premier League victory over Scottish Premier League team Kilmarnock F.C. on January 10, 2012. On January 12, 2012, it was revealed that he had declined to borrow from Al Ittihad, who allegedly made a loan-to-buy agreement to Rangers.

Rangers began to have financial difficulties, and when the company was placed into administration, a dispute with HMRC came to an end. Rangers were dropped ten points as a result of SPL rules, putting them 14 points behind leaders Celtic.

Rangers revealed on February 22, 2012, that they had agreed a fee with South Korean club Busan IPark for midfielder Matt McKay.

McKay signed a two-year contract with Chinese Super League side Changchun Yatai in January 2013. McKay's employment was terminated by the club in July 2013.

McKay was appointed Brisbane Roar Australian Marquee for the next two seasons on August 11, 2013.

International career

In the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, McKay represented Australia at the U-20 level.

In the 90th minute of the 2007 Asian Cup qualifying match against Kuwait at Aussie Stadium, McKay came on as a replacement for Australia.

McKay will have to wait until January 28, 2009 for his second cap, beginning in Australia's 2011 Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Jakarta. He will appear in two more qualifying games for the 2011 Asian Cup, starting against Kuwait on March 5th and playing the second half of the return match against Indonesia on March 3rd 2010.

McKay missed out on Pim Verbeek's 2010 FIFA World Cup squad, but under new coach Holger Osieck, he returned to the Socceroos and appeared in three of Australia's friendlies in the lead up to the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. On October 9, 2010, he came off the bench against Paraguay as well as coming off the bench against Egypt in Cairo on October 17th.

McKay was selected by Holger Osieck for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup squad and started in the team's pre-tournament friendly against the UAE on January 5th. McKay's stay in every game Australia played at the tournament after being left off the bench in the first two games against India and South Korea. He was named in the starting 11 for both the final group stage match against Bahrain and the subsequent quarter-final match against Iraq, and he was instrumental in the former's victory, leading Australia to a 1–0 draw for the match winner. McKay stayed in his starting position for Australia's 6–0 victory over Uzbekistan, scoring three goals and being named Man of the match. McKay's excellent form was kept in the starting lineup by Osieck for the Asian Cup Final, playing the full 120 minutes as the Socceroos lost 1–0 to Japan.

In the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup qualifiers against Guam, McKay captained Australia for the first time on December 7, 2012. Australia won the match 9–0.

McKay also played for Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, playing in his preferred midfield position.

McKay was selected as part of Australia's 2015 AFC Asian Cup squad. In Australia's second group game against Oman, he made his first appearance of the tournament as a starter, scoring Australia's first goal of the game off a Trent Sainsbury header, resulting in a eventual 4–0 victory.

KIERAN GILL: Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is converting all comers to his Spurs campaign, which is the biggest challenge in the north London derby yet, fuelled by his dad's football beliefs

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 22, 2023
KIERAN GILL: When I walk out, my old man is right next to me. He's a tough guy, and he still is today, but he keeps saying to me, 'Keep doing what you're doing, you're going to love this game, and you're going to make it to the top.' Despite this, the guy is a bit of a jerk. "Well done, son, but if you'd made a replacement and stopped this playing-out-from-the-back s***," said the Asian Cup champion, he's gone, he goes.' Isn't a hard guy. Can't please him. That's why I was so disturbed. Tonight, he walks out with me. This was Ange Postecoglou's address to Australia's players ahead of their 2017 Confederations Cup opener with Germany, heartfelt, humble, and amusing. Postecoglou brings thought to these discussions. How he can pull at the heartstrings. What picture he wants in his players' minds. Australia lost 3-2, but this was 'Big Ange' at his best. For his first north London derby, the 58-year-old Australian will be bringing something special. Jim, the only regret, is that his father, Jim, is not here to see if his son does well at the Emirates on Saturday.

Veteran socceros Australia has been chastised for not having 'no standouts' to replace injured player Martin Boyle

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 21, 2022
According to former Socceroos star Matt McKay, Australia's dearth of attacking talent would only exacerbate the consequences of losing Martin Boyle for the tournament. Boyle will miss the entire tournament after suffering from a knee injury while playing for Hibernian at the end of last month, according to coach Graham Arnold on Sunday. On Saturday, the 29-year-old failed a fitness test and was called up to Melbourne City's 26-man squad by Melbourne City winger Marco Tillio.
