Masaharu Fukuyama Career

Career

Fukuyama is best known for his singing career, although he can also be seen in Japanese television dramas. Because of its tie-in with the TV drama Ai wo Douda, his 1992 breakout single "Good night" attracted a large audience. He made his first appearance in Khaku Uta Gassen, 1993, on which only good J-pop and enka artists are allowed to perform. He was boosted by Hitotsu Yane no Shita's, in which he played Chinichan, his second younger brother in the Kashiwagi family, to have his first million-selling single, "It's Only Love/Sorry Baby" in 1994. His 1995 album "Hello" became the second most well-selling single of the year.

In 1996, he went on hiatus, halting all his entertainment except for his radio shows. In 1998, he returned to the entertainment industry after two years of hiatus, "Heart/You," his first single after two years on Oricon chart, charting at number 3 and selling 59,000 copies in total. He began his Daikanshasai (Thanksgiving) series of concerts to show his appreciation for the love he received from his followers.

Masaharu's most popular songs include "Sakura Zaka" and "Niji." His 2000 single "Sakura Zaka" sold more than 71,000 copies in its first week and remained at the top of the Japanese Oricon chart for three weeks; it sold about 2,299,000 copies on the Oricon charts overall. "Niji" was a theme tune for the Japanese drama Water Boys. "Niji/Himawari/Sore ga Subete sa," his triple A-side single, which debuted on August 26, 2003, debuting at No. 1. It was number one on the Oricon single charts, and it remained at number one for five weeks in a row. His fame as Japan's top-selling male solo artist has risen, having sold 21.27 million copies so far.

Fukuyama returned to television in 2007, starring Manabu Yukawa as the brilliant yet eccentric physics associate professor in the television drama Galileo. At the 55th Television Drama Academy Awards for his role, he received the award for his work as "Best Actor." With his co-star in Kou Shibasaki's drama, he formed KOH+.

In 2008, NHK selected Fukuyama to play Sakamoto Ryma, the title character in the 2010 Taiga drama Ryma.

He held his 20th national arena tour in 2009, which included 36 performances in 12 towns in a row from June to September for 36 months, with a total audience count of 500,000. He performed four shows at the Nippon Budokan (May 28, 29, 29, and June 4, 5) on his first-ever solo concerts there as part of his almost yearly thanksgiving concert series. On August 29, and 30, he returned to Nagasaki, Japan's largest city, with simultaneous public viewing of 50,000 Nagasaki residents at the nearby Nagasaki Baseball Stadium (commonly known as the Big N to locals). Official estimates estimate that the Mount Inasa concerts and Big N public viewing combined at 80,000 people in less than two days.

On November 6, 2009, the master ringtone (Chaku Uta) of his song "Hatsukoi) began. It earned over 150,000 downloads in five days and then announced on November 13, 2009, that it would be released as a physical CD single on December 16, 2009. With orders of around 151,000 copies in the first week of the campaign, the single debuted at number one on the Oricon weekly charts, with sales of around 151,000 copies in the first week. On New Year's Eve 2009, he performed "Hatsukoi" at the 60th anniversary NHK Khaku Uta Gassen, his first appearance at the festival since 1993 and appeared in John Woo's forthcoming film Manhut.
