Mary Noailles Murfree Life

Mary Noailles Murfree (January 24, 1850 – July 31,1922), an American fiction writer of novels and short stories who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock.

Many consider her to be Appalachia's first significant female writer and her writing a must for Appalachian literature study, but a number of her characters perpetuate negative stereotypes of the area.

She has been compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett in releasing post-Civil War American local-color literature. Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was named after Murfree's great-grandfather, Colonel Hardy Murfree, who served in the Revolutionary War.
