Martin Kelly Life

Martin Ronald Kelly (born 27 April 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays for Premier League club Crystal Palace. He began his football career with Liverpool, making 62 appearances in various leagues from his debut in 2008 to winning the League Cup in 2012.

He moved to Crystal Palace in 2014 for a £2 million fee. In a friendly against Norway on May 26, 2012, Kelly played two minutes for England, making him the England player with the shortest international career.

For UEFA Euro 2012, he was an inactive participant of their squad.

Personal life

Kelly was in Paris on November 13, 2015, the night when a number of terror attacks had struck the city. Members of the public became concerned about his safety after seeing his Instagram post of a restaurant that was supposed to have been attacked. Crystal Palace said on Twitter that he was safe and well-being after returning to his hotel before the attacks began.

Club career

Kelly was born in Whiston, Merseyside, and raised in Newton-le-Willows by his parents, who attended St Mary's Primary and then St Aelred's Catholic Technology College. At the age of seven, he joined Liverpool and rose through the Academy ranks.

In the summer of 2007, Kelly was promoted to Melwood from the club's academy. He talked about his joy at making the move forward in a post-back interview for Liverpool's official website, despite missing almost two years of football for the youth team due to back issues. During 2007-08, Kelly became a member of Gary Ablett's championship winning reserves team. In Liverpool's 3–0 victory over Tigres UANL in the 2008 Dallas Cup final on March 23, 2008. He scored his second goal in the team's 3–0 victory.

He was one of the first-team squads for the 2008–09 season. He received his first call up to the senior team in November 2008, when he was an unused substitute in Liverpool's UEFA Champions League group stage match against Marseille. He made his debut against PSV Eindhoven on December 9, 2008, a few years after.

Kelly joined League One club Huddersfield Town on loan until the end of the season on March 26, 2009, as the loan transfer window closed. In the 2–1 victory over Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium on March 31, 2009, he made his left-back debut for the Terriers and was lauded for his composed performance. In Huddersfield's 3–2 victory over Walsall at the Bescot Stadium on 18 April, he scored his first goal in professional football, scoring the winner.

Rafael Bentez said that Sami Hyypiä's departure from Liverpool could help Kelly join the first team, with his progress likely to be closely monitored in pre-season. Kelly got off to a good start for Liverpool against Lyon in the UEFA Champions League on October 20, 2009, when the 74th minute saw him walk off injured. Liverpool's official website announced him as the man of the match. He recovered from a groin injury on February 25, 2010 while playing as a replacement against FC Unirea Urziceni in the UEFA Europa League. In the 4–1 victory over Portsmouth at Anfield, he made his Premier League debut by replacing Glen Johnson.

Kelly made his first Premier League appearance of the season on Sunday against Sotirios Kyrgiakos, which Liverpool defeated 21-0 in a match that Liverpool defeated 2–0. He played in the Merseyside derby on January 16, 2011, causing Liverpool's first choice Glen Johnson to play left back. For his work against Everton, he was named Man of the Match by a Liverpoolfc.com journalist. Jamie Carragher complemented his abilities by saying, "I was in the fight against Everton, and I was in the stand against Everton, and I thought it was Thierry Henry against me all those years ago." It was turbo charged."

Kelly played for the whole match away from Arsenal on August 20th, 2011, assisting Liverpool in a 2–0 win. In the second half, he nearly scored as his shot from 15 yards was blocked outside the post. Fabio Capello, England's manager, was on hand at the match and applauded his results. Liverpool defeated 2–0 at Stamford Bridge on November 29, 2011, a header against Chelsea that will progress the team to the semi-finals of the League Cup.

He tore his anterior cruciate ligament against Manchester United on September 23, 2012, and was barred from action for almost six months. Lucas Leiva was back in the third round of the League Cup a year and a days later against the same opponents. Since Glen Johnson was out for a month, Brendan Rodgers argued that the former will get his chance as the new first-choice right-back.

Kelly joined Crystal Palace on a three-year contract on August 14, 2014, paying for a reported fee of £2 million. In his first season at Selhurst Park, he played 34 games (31 in the league) while Palace finished 10th, finishing eighth.

On February 21, 2016, he scored his first goal for Palace and first goal since November 2011, the only goal in the FA Cup's fifth round against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. He was an ineffective substitute in the final on May 21st, a 2–1 loss to Manchester United.

He renewed his deal with the club until 2021 in February 2019. On August 21, 2020, he was one of four players to sign a new contract.

In May 2022, Kelly announced that after the end of June, he would leave before his deal comes to an end.

Kelly joined West Bromwich Albion on a two-year deal on September 1, 2022. In a 1-0 loss to Preston North End on Friday, Kelly made his first appearance for the Baggies.

International career

Kelly was called up in early 2009 for the England U-19 squad that competed Spain U-19s on February 10th. Kelly went on to make 5 appearances for the Under-19s, with his last appearance coming in a 2–1 win over Scotland U-19s on June 1st.

Kelly was called up to the England under-20 squad for the match against Serbia in August 2009, making his debut in the 5–0 triumph. He then appeared in all three matches for the team in the Under-20 World Cup finals in Egypt that year. In a pre-2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup friendly, Kelly made his England under-20 team's 5–0 win over Montenegro U-20s. He appeared at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, finishing third in Group D, Group D. Kelly made four appearances for the under-20 team.

Kelly, Aston Villa's Marc Albrighton, and former teammate Jordan Henderson were given their first call-up to the England Under-21 squad on August 5, 2010. He made his debut on August 10, 2010, replacing him as a replacement and scoring England's second goal as they defeated Uzbekistan at Ashton Gate. England defeated Iceland 5–0 on November 11, 2011, and he scored once more for the team. In only his fifth appearance against Belgium on November 14, he scored his third under-21 goal in only his third appearance.

Kelly was given his first call-up to the senior England team on May 22nd, 2012, and he will meet Norway four days later in an international friendly. Despite not being named in his UEFA Euro 2012 squad, Roy Hodgson was called up by him. In the 87th minute, he made his debut as a replacement, replacing Phil Jones at right back. Kelly's international career is the shortest for an England player having played two minutes and thirty seconds. Nathaniel Chalobah made a cameback on his 2018 England debut and now has zero minutes to his career, but after added time was included, he played for one second longer than Kelly.

Kelly was called up to the Euro 2012 squad on Friday to replace Gary Cahill, who had broken his jaw against Belgium during a 1–0 friendly win. During the tournament in Ukraine and Poland, he was sick with a virus. He was not used during the championship, in which England advanced to the quarter-finals.
