Mark Kozelek Life

Mark Edward Kozelek (born January 24, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and occasional actor.

He is best known as the singer and primary recording artist of the indie folk band Sun Kil Moon, with whom he has released ten studio albums, as well as being a founding member of the indie rock band Red House Painters, who has released six studio albums from 1989 to 2001. Kozelek was born and raised in Massillon, Ohio, and sparked a passion for music as a youth.

The pair met drummer Anthony Koutsos in Atlanta, Georgia, and formed Red House Painters with guitarist Gorden Mack and bass guitarist Jerry Vessel.

The band, who is signed to record label 4AD, has released four studio albums to critical acclaim.

Kozelek released Songs for a Blue Guitar, the band's fifth studio album, in 1996, mainly alone.

The band's last studio album, Old Ramon (2001), was postponed for three years.

In the interim, Kozelek released both an album and an EP of AC/DC cover songs. The trio, who reunited with Koutsos and Vessel, continued to perform under the new name of Sun Kil Moon, after releasing their debut album, Ghosts of the Great Highway, in 2003.

Kozelek's fourth studio album, Admiral Fell Promises (2010), as a solo act, and it continued to perform largely alone on its sequel, Among the Leaves (2012), influenced by classical guitar music.

The album featured a deeply personal lyrical perspective, which continued on Perpet from the Sea and Mark Kozelek & Desertshore's joint solo releases in 2013. Sun Kil Moon's sixth studio album, Benji, was released in 2014 to widespread critical praise and increased exposure, with its sequel, Universal Themes, featuring lengthy compositions and stream-of-consciousness lyrics.

In 2016, Kozelek and Jesu released Jesu/Sun Kil Moon, a joint studio album. Kozelek has recorded twenty-seven studio albums, including work in Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters, and his own solo projects.

Mark Kozelek Career

Career

Kozelek was born and raised in Massillon, Ohio, and was raised in the Catholic faith. He led a band called God Forbid in his teenage years. He met drummer Anthony Koutsos while moving to Atlanta, Georgia. With the addition of guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Vessel, the pair reassembled in San Francisco, California. Red House Painters unveiled a number of highly acclaimed albums from 1992 to 1996, showcasing Kozelek's tense, autobiographical songs.

However, Kozelek's move to the 4AD brand, as well as a major label merger, which left Red House Painters' 1998 album Old Ramon on the shelf, was highly disappointing and stifled the company's momentum.

He released the solo EP Rock 'n' Roll Singer in 2000, which included three original songs as well as covers of John Denver's "Around and Around" and three AC/DC songs ("You Ain't Got a Hold on Me" and three others. Two of the AC/DC coverage versions of Rock 'n' Roll Singer were radical re-arrangements of the originals, which stripped Bon Scott's lyrics from their hard rock context and moved them into more acoustic "folk ballad" settings.

In 2001, Kozelek introduced What's Next to the Moon, a full-length album made solely of AC/DC covers.

In the years between his band tours, Kozelek's music appeared on compilations and tribute albums. He performed "New Partner" in the Will Oldham (a.k.a. I Am Cold Rock, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's tribute album, is available on DVD. I am Dull Grass. Around this time, Kozelek commandeered a tribute album to John Denver, starring Will Oldham, The Innocence Mission, and Low to name a few. As a duet with Rachel Goswell, Kozelek also appeared on "Around and Around" on the compilation.

The Sub Pop label released White Christmas Live, a limited edition live recording. Several Red House Painters songs were performed in a stripped-down, acoustic guitar-and-vocals style, and one was a cappella version, in addition to his solo collection. An early version of Sun Kil Moon's "Lily and Parrots" is tacked on as an uncredited compensation track. "Admiral Fell Promises" is also included in the album, one of the first songs to be announced.

Sun Kil Moon debuted with Ghosts of the Great Highway in 2003, as well as new RHP contributors Jerry Vessel and Anthony Koutsos, as well as American Music Club's Tim Mooney. Caldo Verde Records, Kozelek's newly formed brand, first appeared in 2005. The album, titled Tiny Cities, is made entirely of Modest Mouse covers. Once more, Kozelek's cover versions were very different from the originals. As to what they think about the record, Kozelek said in a February 2014 interview with Seattle's The Stranger.

Kozelek was invited by Toronto indie rock band Paper Bag Records to solely contribute to their See You on the Moon campaign in 2006. Leo and Luna's original album "Leo and Luna" is included in a Kids of All Ages compilation. In November 2006, Kozelek released Little Drummer Boy Live, the nation's first live album.

Kozelek's third album, released in 2008, was released in 2008. Ben Gibbard, Will Oldham, and Eric Pollard's guest vocal contributions are included on the album.

Along with the new album, Nights of Passed Over, a 256-page, hard-cover book of all the lyrics to Kozelek's solo albums, Red House Painters' songs, and Sun Kil Moon's songs, was also published. It also includes setlists, handwritten songs, and Kozelek's preface. The first Portuguese edition of this book was published in 2002, and it included all the lyrics up to that point, in both English and Portuguese. The updated version dates back to Sun Kil Moon's days, while the original version features live and rare interpretations of songs from 1996 to 2007. The print is limited to 2,500 copies and is exclusive to his brand's website.

Two previously unveiled instruments, as well as two previously unreleased instrumentals, were released on December 9, 2008. Find Me, Ruben Olivares: Live in Spain and Lost Verses Live followed in spring 2009.

Sun Kil Moon's fourth album, Admiral Fell Promises, was announced on April 23, 2010. On July 13, 2010, the album was released.

On Tour, a documentary film titled Mark Kozelek was released by Caldo Verde Records on August 16, 2011. The film was shot during portions of Mark Kozelek's European/North American tours of 2010 and early 2011.

On May 29, 2012, Sun Kil Moon's fifth album, Among the Leaves, was released on Caldo Verde Records.

Colin Kozelek also performed as a singer and bass player to Desertshore, a band featuring Red House Painters guitarist Phil Carney, classically trained pianist Chris Connolly, and more recently Sun Kil Moon drummer Mike Stevens. Drawing Of Threes, the group's second studio album, was released on November 22, 2011, Caldo Verde Records). As a singer and bass player, Kozelek appeared on 6 out of ten tracks. He appeared on all ten tracks on the third studio album titled Mark Kozelek & Desertshore (released on August 20, 2013 Caldo Verde Records), where he appears as vocalist and bassist on all 10 tracks. Kozelek released Perils From the Sea, a collaboration album with multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf, in the same year, and it includes album Like Rats.

Sun Kil Moon Unveiled Benji in 2014 to wide acclaim, receiving a score of 85 on the critical rating portal, Metacritic. "Kozelek's most personal work to date," No Ripcord writes, and Kitty Empire of Observer adds, "it may be this difficult artist's most direct work." "When I remember 2014 in music, there will be Sun Kil Moon's Benji and there will be everything else." Several publications lauded Kozelek's songwriting abilities, as well as lauded Benji as his best work to date.

Universal Themes, Sun Kil Moon's sixth album of original material, was released on June 2, 2015. Steve Shelley, a drummer on Benji who appeared on Benji and later released an album titled "Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood," appeared on the album. In 2017, and 2018, Kozelek toured Europe, the United States, and South America in favor of the album. "Wastowed in San Francisco hotels and studios between May 2017 and January 2018," Kozelek's eponymously named double CD album was released on May 11, 2018.
