Mark Fish Career

Club career

Fish began his career in Cape Town under the guidance of renowned coach Steve Coetsee, who played for Arcadia Shepherds, an amateur team based at the Caledonian Stadium in Pretoria. By then Jomo Cosmos coach Roy Matthews, he was spotted as a striker and progressed as a striker. He was born at Cosmos and went on to become one of South Africa's most promising defenders at the time.

After Cosmos were relegated in 1994, the Orlando Pirates signed Fish. Under Mike Makaab's tutelage, he arguably played the best football of his career at the Pirates. He also won the league championship at the Pirates in 1994, the 1995 African Champions League, and the 1995 Bobsave Super Bowl (then the premier cup in South Africa). In the 1996 CAF Super Cup, he captained The Buccaneers after they defeated JS Kabylie. In the same year, he was part of the history of South Africa's national team to win the African Cup of Nations for the first time since South Africa's return to FIFA in 1992.

After losing the opportunity to play for his boyhood team, Manchester United, foreign scouts arrived and Lazio of Italy had him signed him. However, he did return to England after just one season with Lazio to become Bolton Wanderers' highest paid player. Fish, a mainstay in Bolton's back-to-back to the Premiership for the first time, has received accolades from both teammates and those against whom he competed against, most notable Manchester United forward Andrew Cole. Despite Fish's efforts, Bolton was relegated on the last day of the season, despite having 40 points, usually enough to stave off the decline. Fish, who had been playing in lower leagues, quickly gaining cult status among Bolton's followers, as shown by his name "Feesh" and a particularly eyecatching headgear in the form of a massive Blue fish made available in retail stores. However, new suitors came soon, but it wasn't until Sam Allardyce's star began to fall in Lancashire that it was revealed. Fish soon joined Danish colleague Claus Jensen and Alan Curbishley in a £700,000 transfer in November 2000. As he was affectionately known throughout his playing career, "The Big Fish" went on to make 102 Premiership appearances for the Addicks, scoring three times.

In 2005, he began to slip out of favour at Charlton. He went on to have a short loan period (45 minutes) at Ipswich Town in the 2005–06 season, but Fish had to withdraw due to a serious cruciate ligament injury.

Fish signed a six-month deal with his first team, Jomo Cosmos, in early 2007, but did not participate in a formal game due to his poor fitness.

International career

Fish is best known internationally for his contribution to South Africa's thriving national soccer team when they won the 1996 African Cup of Nations. In the quarter final against Algeria, he scored one of the goals. In both the 1996 and 1998 African Cup of Nations, he was selected to the Team of the Tournament. He had 62 caps for the South African national team, scoring twice.

On October 6, 1993, he made his international debut in a friendly match against Mexico on October 6, 1993, and on June 20, 2004, he earned his last cap in a World Cup qualifier against Ghana.
