Jones graduated from RADA's drama school and appeared in many productions, including Pride and Prejudice and The Women on the West End. She appeared in one episode of Coronation Street as a policewoman for the first time in 1961.

Jones' first big television role came in BBC's 1967 adaptation of The Forsyte Saga. Jones played Smither, a small but recurring role. She appeared in Nearest and Dearest twice more than a few years ago. Polly Barraclough's best-known part before playing Blanche Hunt in Coronation Street was as Polly Barraclough with Mark McManus, and she appeared in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, a 1971 BBC miniseries.

She appeared on Coronation Street for another time as a shoplifter in 1967, many years after her first Coronation Street appearance. Blanche Hunt, the mother of Deirdre, appeared in 1974 for the first time in her first appearance as Blanche Hunt. Patricia Cutts, the part's original actress, had died of suicide after appearing in only two episodes. Jones, who had previously trained for the role, was given the opportunity to take over the role at short notice, though storylines for Blanche had already been written.

Jones was a regular cast member until 1976. Tracy was on the show for a brief period when Blanche's grandchild Tracy was born in 1977, when Deirdre's marriage to Ray Langton broke down in 1978 and Deirdre married Ken Barlow in 1981.

In 1999, she became a regular cast member. Blanche's trademark withering one-liners and no-nonsense attitude made her a long-time fan of the show.

Jones received the British Soap Award for Best Comedy Performance in 2005 and 2008. Jones said that she didn't find her character amusing, and that if she did, she wouldn't play her properly.

During Monday's episode, Coronation Street supporters lauded "brave" and "strong" Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) after she confronted rapist Aaron Sandford (James Craven) and praised him. Fans of Soap compared the character's fiery outburst to those of her ancestors, including mother Tracey (Kate Ford), grandmother Deidre (Anne Kirkbride) and great grandmother Blanche (Maggie Jones). Following a boozy night out, the teen has been grappling with traumatic flashbacks, and although she had initially reported Aaron to police, she decided to change her report.
