Career

Shaffer has appeared in many soap operas, including Search for Tomorrow, Hidden Faces (1968-1989), and Where the Heart Is. Serena Faraday/Josie on The Edge of Night starred from 1975 to 1976.

Shaffer appeared on Ryan's Hope from 1977 to 1984, and then reprised the role as the show's finale in 1989. Goldie Kane, Erica's nefarious stepmother, was welcomed into All My Children in the summer of 1987. She appeared on Guiding Light as Lewis oil client Mrs. Humphreys (1993), and a stint as the judge in the Peter Lewis custody dispute (1994).

She was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Rae Woodard on Ryan's Hope; in 1983, she received the award. Shaffer appeared on the short-lived Norman serialized sitcom All That Glitters in addition to her daytime appearances.

Shaffer began writing about soap operas rather than focusing on them. She has written for Ryan's Hope, Loving, General Hospital, and As the World Turns since the 1980s.

Shaffer has written many books in addition to scripting.
