Lisa Murkowski Life

Lisa Ann Murkowski (born May 22, 1957) is an American politician who has been serving as Alaska's senior senator since 2002.

She is the second most senior Republican woman in the Senate and is a member of the Republican Party.

She is often referred to as one of the most moderate Republicans in the Senate, as well as Susan Collins of Maine, and she is a crucial swing vote. Murkowski's daughter is the niece of former United States President John Kennedy. Frank Murkowski, Alaska's senator and governor, was sent by the Governor.

She served in the Alaska House of Representatives and was later named Majority Leader before her appointment to the Senate.

She was elected to the Senate by her father, who resigned in December 2002 to become Alaska's governor.

She completed her father's unexpired term, which ended in January 2005. In 2004, Murkowski ran for and gained a full term.

In 2010, she ran for a second term.

Murkowski ran as a write-in candidate and defeated both Miller and McAdams in the general election after losing the Republican primary to Tea Party candidate Joe Miller in the primary; this made her the second female president in the United States. Senator George Kennedy (and first since Strom Thurmond in 1954) was elected by write-in election.

Despite winning three straight terms in the Senate, Murkowski has never secured a majority of the vote; she has won pluralities in each of her three campaigns, totaling 48.6% in 2010 and 44.4% in 2016.

Personal life

Murkowski is married to Verne Martell. Nicolas and Matthew, the couple's two sons, are very active. Murkowski is a Roman Catholic.

Murkowski's net worth stood at more than $1.4 million as of 2018, according to OpenSecrets.org.

Murkowski said she would sell off property she bought from Anchorage businessman Bob Penney in July 2007, a day after a Washington watchdog group filed a Senate ethics lawsuit alleging that Penney sold the property at a much cheaper price. According to the National Legal and Policy Center's complaint, "the transaction amounted to an unlawful gift worth between $70,000 and $170,000." Murkowski purchased the property from two developers connected to the Ted Stevens investigation, according to the Associated Press.

Murkowski revised her Senate financial reports for 2004-2006, bringing in more than $60,000 per year from the auction of a house in 2003 and more than $40,000 per year since the 2005 sale of her "Alaska Pasta Company."

Republicans drag Biden over new oil and gas restrictions on 13 MILLION acres in Alaska calling it an 'illegal attack' on the state's 'lifeblood'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 19, 2024
The Biden administration moved to restrict the use of 13 million acres of federal petroleum reserves in Alaska leading to fury from the state's lawmakers who say the energy is vital to the local economy. The administration's decision to restrict new oil and gas leasing comes after a yearslong deliberation over the use of the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPR-A). The saga has featured outcry from environmentalists who believe the ruling does not go far enough and from energy advocates that say restricting the area will harm the state's financial interests. Anticipating the White House's decision, Alaska's Republican Sens. Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski both railed against the petroleum restrictions Thursday along with several other GOP senators. 'It's more than a one-two punch to Alaska, because when you take off access to our resources, when you say you cannot drill, you cannot produce, you cannot explore, you cannot move it - this is the energy insecurity that we're talking about,' Murkowski said Thursday.
