He was first elected in 1998 Quebec in the Lanaudière province as a member of the Parti Québécois (PQ).

Francois Legault Career

Business career

Legault served as an administrator for Provigo and as an auditor for Ernst & Young until 1984. Legault joined Nationair Canada as the head of finance and administration in 1985 and later became the marketing director at Quebecair. He co-founded Air Transat in 1986 and served as the chief executive officer of the company until 1997. The airline became one of Canada's biggest airline groups to sell charter flights within a short period of time. Legault served on the boards of several businesses, including Provigo Inc., Culinar, Sico, Technilab Inc., and Bestar Inc., as well as the Marc-Aurèle Fortin private museum.

Political career

Legault was first elected by Lucien Bouchard as Minister for industry and commerce after the 1998 election. He was later named education minister.

Legault aided Bernard Landry when Bouchard resigned.

Legault was appointed as minister of Education and then as Minister of Health and Social Services by the Landry. He was re-elected in 2003, but the PQ lost to the Quebec Liberal Party. He remained on the PQ front bench as the critic of economics, economic growth, and finances.

In the 2005 PQ leadership race, Legault endorsed Richard Legendre, which was won by André Boisclair. Legault was renamed the PQ critic for economic growth and finances after his re-election in 2007.

Legault was re-elected in the 2008 race but announced on June 25, 2009 that he would step down from politics. Any political analysts at the time characterized him as a potential candidate in a future leadership race. However, some Liberals believed he could be able to replace Jean Charest, then Prime Minister, before proceeding to replace him.

Legault co-founded the "Coalition pour le Future du Québec" ("Coalition for the Future of Quebec") in February 2011. Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), a national party established in November 2011. Regardless of their views on Quebec nationalism, Quebec federalism, and Quebec autonomism, the CAQ aims to bring together like-minded voters in a single party. Legault said that a CAQ government would never hold a referendum on sovereignty in a break with his imperialist past. He became disenchanted with absolutism and resigned from the PQ soon after resigning from politics. He concluded that Quebec is part of Canada but that the CAQ will "explore all options" to protect Quebec's interests and demand greater autonomy.

In the 2012 general election, the party came third, winning 19 seats and 27.05 percent of the vote. The CAQ came in third place in the 2014 general election, but their seat number increased to 22.

Legault led the CAQ to a gain of 53 seats in a total of 74, bringing the CAQ from third place to a majority of 11 and making Legault the Premier of Quebec. He is the first premier of the United States or Parti Québécois, and he is the first premier in 48 years not to hail from the Liberals or Parti Québécois.

Legault led the CAQ to a second straight majority in the 2022 general election. Legault gained 14 seats in the election, raising his caucuses.
