Leslie Charleson (born February 22, 1945) is an American actress best known for her role as Monica Quartermaine in the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital.
Life and career
Charleson was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Kate Charleson, the actress, was her sister. In 1964, she began her career on A Flame in the Wind, a short-lived ABC daytime soap opera. She appeared in As the World Turns in 1966 and joined the cast. She appeared on television soap opera Love Is a Many Splendored Thing from 1967 to 1970. She appeared in Iris Donnelly Garrison's role. Her character was part of a very popular love triangle with David Birney and Donna Mills.
In the episode "The Night of Fire and Brimstone," she appeared as a doctor's daughter in the Wild West in 1968. From 1970 to 1977, she appeared on many television series, including Adam-12; Emergency! Mannix; Mannix; Marcus Welby, M.D. Cannon's Birthdays; San Francisco's Streets; and The Rockford Files. She appeared in the 1973 science-fiction film The Day of the Dolphin and co-starred Shelley Winters in the television drama Revenge! (1971). Charleson was also involved in a string of failed television pilots.
Charleson returned to daytime television in the role of Monica Quartermaine in the ABC soap opera General Hospital on August 16, 1977. Fred Silverman, then president of ABC, begged her to join the show, but it was near the bottom of the charts and near cancellation. Patsy Rahn was dismissed as Monica, a doctor caught between her husband Jeff Webber and his back-from-the-dead brother, her true love Rick Webber, who was reunited with her husband Jeff Webber and her late brother. She was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series four times for her long-running appearance on the program. It was announced on August 24, 2010, that Charleson would be demoted to recurring status. Charleson is now the longest-serving cast member of GM.
