Career

Johnson was born in Hampstead, England, and studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he spent four years in the Coldstream Guards before moving to the entertainment industry in the 1950s. Lock Up Your Daughters (1959), one of Henry Fielding's first major projects, was as composer and music director in a musical adaptation of his "Rome Upon Rape," which opened in Bernard Miles' Mermaid Theatre. The score, which featured Lionel Bart's lyrics, was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award. On stage, Johnson performed on Pieces of Eight (1959), and The Four Musketeers (1967), starring Harry Secombe.

Johnson's 1961 debut with "Sucu Sucu," the theme song from Top Secret's UK television show Top Secret, "Sucu Sucu." He was to be the most popular in television scoring, and in this segment of television scoring. He produced over fifty themes and scores, including the one used on "This Is Your Life"), The Avengers (from 1965), Animal Magic (entitled "Las Vegas"), Jason King, The New Avengers, and The Professionals, from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was one of the founders of Mark One Productions, the television production company behind The New Avengers and The Professionals, along with Albert Fennell and Brian Clemens.

Johnson, who was introduced by Peter Clayton and broadcast on Sunday evenings from October 1973 to present, was responsible for the theme music to BBC Radio 1's Sounds of Jazz.

The Good Companion (1958), The Moonraker (1958), Tiger Bay, Dr. Strangelove, First Men in the Moon, You Must Be Joking! (the 1975 Christopher Lee film). Mister Jerico, a television film starring many members of the original Avengers team, including Patrick Macnee, was one of his other contributions.

On the Unicorn-Kanchana label, Johnson released several albums. These included his own compositions, The Royal Tour, The Wind in the Willows, and Symphony: The synthesis for a large ensemble containing a jazz orchestra and symphony orchestra. Symphony was first released by EMI Records, including Tubby Hayes, Don Lusher, Joe Harriott, Kenny Wheeler, and Stan Tracey, as well as the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Along with an album of his compositions, The Avengers, The New Avengers, and The Professionals, which includes an album of his scores for The First Men in the Moon, Dr Strangelove, and Captain Kronos, and two albums of other people's compositions: Dmitri Tiomkin's suite and Bernard Herrmann's suite for North by Northwest, and Alan Herrmann's suite for North by Northwest.

Since 1997, Johnson has performed with the London Big Band, which he formed. In May 1997, the theme "The Professionals" appeared on the UK Singles Chart at number 36. He has also provided DVD commentary on several of the shows in which he has been active. Several of Johnson's songs have since been used as stock music for a number of animated films, including SpongeBob SquarePants and Ren And Stimpy.

In the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to music, Johnson was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
