Lauri Elias Markkanen (born 22 May 1997) is a Finnish professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He was drafted seventh overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2017 NBA draft before being included in a trade for Jimmy Butler to the Chicago Bulls.

He is the son of Finnish basketball players Pekka and Riikka Markkanen, as well as a brother of football player Eero Markkanen.

Personal life

He is the uncle of Pekka and Riikka Markkanen (née Ellonen), two of professional basketball players, and professional basketball player Miikka and professional footballer Eero. Markkanen and his partner Verna Aho had a boy together in February 2018. Their second child was born in October 2020.

Early life and career

Markkanen grew up in Jyväskylä and spent his junior years in HonsU's hometown team. Markkanen competed for HBA-Märsky in the Finnish second-tier league from 2014 to 2016.

College career

Markkanen pledged to the Arizona Wildcats in NCAA Division I before the 2016–17 season on October 17, 2015. On November 11, Lauri signed a letter of intent to Arizona. According to ESPN.com, Finn was regarded as "a potential one-and-done candidate for the NBA draft." He was the first player since Mike Bibby to wear the jersey number 10. SB Nation named him as "the best shooting 7-footer college basketball has ever seen" in January 2017. Markkanen was named Pac-12 Player of the Week as well as the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week this week. Professional career

Markkanen was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the seventh pick of the first round of the 2017 NBA draft. On draft night, his rights were sold to the Chicago Bulls alongside Zach Lavine and Kris Dunn for Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton's rights, as well as the rights to Justin Patton. Markkanen signed with the Bulls on July 5th, 2017.

Markkanen made his NBA debut with the Bulls on October 19, 2017, scoring 17 points. Markkanen also set a new NBA record for the most 3-pointers in the first three games of an NBA career with ten 3-pointers on October 24. Markkanen defeated Hanno Möttölä (765) as the highest scorer among NBA players from Finland after scoring seventeen points against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 28, 2018. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team on May 22, 2018. With 7.5 and fourth in scoring, he finished his rookie season leading the Bulls, placing third among rookies behind Kyle Kuzma and Ben Simmons.

Markkanen appeared in only 23 games of the season. In a loss to the Brooklyn Nets on January 28, he had a career-high 19 rebounds. In a victory over Brooklyn on Sunday, he had 31 points and 18 rebounds; a career-high 35 points along with 15 rebounds; and 31 points and 17 rebounds in a victory over the Atlanta Bulls on Sunday; a career-high 35 points along with 15 rebounds; and 15 rebounds; and 33 points and 17 rebounds. Markkanen was out for the remainder of the season after suffering from health issues while playing against the Toronto Raptors on March 28. In the 52 games he played, he finished second on the team with 18.7 points and 20 double-doubles, ranking second on the team with 19.7 points and 20 double-doubles (fourth in the NBA).

Markkanen started the season with 35 points and 17 rebounds in a one-point loss to the Charlotte Hornets, the most opening-day points for a Chicago Bull since Michael Jordan in 1995.

Markkanen scored 12-of-18 shootings from the field and 6-of-11 from three players on a 123-122 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on January 30, 2021. Markkanen lost his starting position after the Bulls added veteran big men Daniel Theis and Nikola Vuevi to their roster to solidify their frontcourt. Markkanen came off the bench for the second time in his 194 games and second in his career career, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, and an assist in a 116-102 loss to the Golden State Warriors on March 29. Since Markkanen joined the second unit, he has been restricted in time and has been playing the small forward role. Markkanen went scoreless in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on April 12th for the first time in his career.

Markkanen was acquired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team sign-and-trade deal that also included the Portland Trail Blazers on August 28, 2021.

Markkanen was traded to the Utah Jazz, as well as Ochai Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three first round picks, and two pick trades in exchange for Donovan Mitchell on September 1, 2022.

National team career

Markkanen made his international debut with the Finnish U-18 national team in 2015 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championships. Markkanen led the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in the summer of 2015. He averaged 18.2 points per game. He was the top scorer in the 2016 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship tournament with an average of 24.9 points per game, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Markkanen competed with the Finn senior team at EuroBasket 2017, which was partially held in his home country. He led his team to the round of 16 by averaging 19.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in six games.

In 2022, he attended his second EuroBasket tournament. Markkanen scored 43 points to lead Finland to a 94-86 victory over Croatia, a new all-time record for a Finnish player at the EuroBasket. The victory also marked Finland's first quarterfinal appearance in 55 years, the first since 1967. Finland lost in the quarterfinals to Spain; Markkanen averaged 27.9 points on 54.2% shooting and 8 rebounds in seven games.
