Early life
Hawkins was born and raised in Harvey, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago. Hawkins was growing up and he lived with his grandparents until he was 13 years old, and he cites their lives and their children's lives as a result of their work.
Hawkins began playing basketball at Thornton High School, where he first competed in basketball. Hawkins left the basketball team sophomore year and joined the speech team, where he became a two-time state champion, owing to his grandfather's influence.
Hawkins captured the state title in the Illinois High School Association's Original Comedy Competition in 2005, while placing third in the IHSA state competition in Humorous Interpretation. In 2006, he and a friend won the state title in Humorous Duet Acting, while the Hawkins also placed fourth at state that year in Original Comedy.
Career
Hawkins attended Illinois State University on a full tuition scholarship, where he concentrated on theatre arts. In his first college play, he starred as Toledo from Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, August Wilson. He gained his first big motion picture role in the Ernie Davis Story, the biopic of Ernie Davis, starring Davis' teammate Art Baker while in college. He took a year and a half off of school before returning to school in 2007. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He graduated in 2012 from the University of London.
Hawkins appeared in many television series, including HBO's Ballers, TBS' House of Payne, MTV's Underemployed, and ABC's Detroit 1-8-7.
