Lalo Schifrin Life

Boris Claudio "Lalo" Schifrin (born June 21, 1932) is an Argentine-American pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor.

He is best known for his large body of film and TV scores from the 1950s, including "Theme From Mission: Impossible," Bullitt and Enter the Dragon.

He has received five Grammy Awards and six Oscar nominations.

Schifrin is also known for his collaborations with Clint Eastwood from the late 1960s to the 1980s, especially the Dirty Harry films, which were heavily associated with the jazz music scene.

Early life

Schifrin was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a Jewish family. Luis Schifrin, his father, helmed the second violin section of the orchestra at the Teatro Colón for three decades. Schifrin started studying piano with Enrique Barenboim, the father of pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, at the age of six. Lalo Schifrin identifies a familial link to American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin. Schifrin began studying piano with the Greek-Russian expat Andreas Karalis, former director of the Kyiv Conservatory, and in harmony with Argentine composer Juan Carlos Paz. Schifrin also became interested in jazz during this period.

Although Schifrin studied sociology and law at the University of Buenos Aires, it was music that captured his attention. He received a scholarship to the Conservatoire de Paris at age 20. He performed jazz in the Paris clubs at night. Schifrin, an Argentina bandoneon, appeared on piano with Argentine bandoneon giant stor Piazzolla in 1955 and represented his country at the International Jazz Festival in Paris.
