Kierin Magenta Kirby (born August 15, 1963), better known as Lady Miss Kier, is an American singer, songwriter, DJ, designer, fashion icon, and activist.
She was the vocalist for the band Deee-Lite, followed by a career as a DJ and solo songwriter.
She is also known widely for her social, environmental, and human-rights activism.
Early life
Kirby was born in Youngstown, Ohio. As a child, she lived in Pittsburgh, Virginia Beach, and Washington, D.C. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology but she was disillusioned by the teachers and dropped out immediately. When she dropped out, she started to design and make her own eccentric disco-inspired clothes that she then sold to people she met at nightclubs.
Music career
Kirby met Ukrainian-born Dmitry Brill ("Supa DJ Dmitry") and designed, produced, and sold silver platform boots and a glitter blue spacesuit for his band, Shazork in 1982. She began writing and recording music with Brill in 1986, forming the band Deee-Lite.
Brill was introduced to Towa Tei, a Japanese-raised Korean DJ, shortly after their first show in 1986. Kirby and Brill invited him to join their band several years ago. The three musicians, as a result of Kirby's vocal and writing abilities, as well as Brill's sampling skills and Tei's techno mixing, formed the band Deee-Lite. They appeared every month, with Kier designing new costumes for each one. She continued to work as a waitress and go-go dancer until the band signed a seven-album contract with Elektra Records.
The Deee-Lite's sound was a mashup of house music, electro, and experimental dance music. With the introduction of their first album World Clique and the hit "Groove Is in the Heart," Deee-Lite came to fame in 1990. Deee-Lite was nominated for several awards, including Video of the Year, Best Dance Video, Best New Artist, Best Breakthrough Video, and Best Editing in a Video at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
Kirby was instrumental in the band's success: writing, producing, and playing the majority of the band's songs. The three people were known for their outrageous appearances and costumes as well as their music: Super DJ Dmitri, Jungle DJ Towa Tei, and Lady Miss Kier. Kirby is credited with the band's design and production as well as a large portion of the band's promotional and marketing literature. Her first appearance was based on a newly updated and exaggerated retro style 1960s fashion. Her signature look was a zip-up catsuit, platform boots, and flipped hair-do.
The band's second album, Infinity Within, was released in 1992, a politically charged piece. In 1994, Dewdrops in the Garden was released. Neither of the two follow-up albums matched the commercial success of the debut album. The second and third albums were hampered by the label's inability, which refused to promote, promote touring, or fund contractual projects.
During the recording of their third album in 1993, the band practically broke down, but Kirby and Brill decided to finish the project and tour together to market the album before heading their separate ways.
After Brill and Kirby's marriage fell apart in 1995, Deeelite disbanded.
In 1996, a remix album was released. In 2001, a greatest hits album was released.
Lady Miss Kier, who had left the band, migrated to London in 1995, where she began touring as a disc jockey and learned the art of production, recording, and engineering. She worked on Bootsy Collins, I Kamanchi, and A Guy Called Geraldine in the late 1990s. To the compilation Straight Up & Dirty, she contributed an exclusive solo track titled "I'm Not Staying at Home." Since going solo, she has worked and co-written with writers including Full Cycle, George Clinton, Walter "Junie" Morrison, A Guy Called Gerald, Apollo Heights, and several P-Funk luminaries. She performed live for a variety of music, film, and art festivals, as well as directing several Gay pride festivals around the world. She began performing a Deee-Lite tribute at various occasions, including Kenzo's 2013 Paris Fashion Week appearance, as well as a homage to Santos Party House disc jockey Mark Kamins.
She has appeared at thousands of clubs and major music festivals, including Coachella Festival (2006), Berlin's Berghain (2010), and Sydney Mardi Gras (2012), as well as radio shows such as East Village Radio and Sirius XM.
She began performing live new unreleased music in 2005, with George Clinton's anti-war song "Bullet Proof" on the DFA. She has appeared at numerous festivals and gay pride festivals as well as opened for James Brown's last tour to the Good Vibrations festival in Australia.
