Kristine Young (born Kristine Young) is an American actress best known for her appearances on the television series Buffy Summers' mother Joyce Summers (July Summers), as well as her appearance in I Shrunk the Children (1989).
Early life
Kristine Young was born in Boise, Idaho, and she changed her name because she was often confused with another similarly named actress. "Sutherland" was after her cat, who, coincidently, appeared in Joss Whedon's first attempt to introduce Buffy to viewers. She is not connected to Donald Sutherland, his sons Kiefer, Rossif, and Angus, nor his granddaughter Sarah Sutherland.
She attended high school in Lexington, Kentucky, where she participated in the Tates Creek Drama program. She enrolled in the University of Kentucky after graduating.
Personal life
Sutherland is married to actor John Pankow. They have one child.
Career
Sutherland's first film appearance was as a secretary in Legal Eagles (1986). In the 1989 film Honey, I Shrunk the Children, she appeared as Mae Thompson. Buffy's mother appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was a major jump for her career from 1997 to 2002. Joss Whedon later revealed that one of the reasons for his selection of Sutherland was the fact that she exuded a warm demeanor as well as what seemed to be a close resemblance to actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who would be portraying her daughter in the film. She appeared on the show for the first five seasons before moving to three more guest appearances, one in season 6 and two in season 7.
Sutherland completed a photography course at Santa Monica College and then opened a portrait studio specializing in portraits after leaving Buffy. She appeared in the television miniseries Comanche Moon in 2008 and appeared in a New Amsterdam episode.
In the English dub of The Cat Returns, she sang Haru's Mother.
