Personal life

Draper was born in Gary, Indiana, to Phyllis (née Culbertson), a Peace Corps administrator, and William Henry Draper III, president and chairman of the US Export-Import Bank. Dr. Pepper grew up in Chicago, Illinois, as well as Palo Alto and Arlington, California. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University (1977) and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University (1980).

Draper married musician Michael Wolff after meeting him in 1991 when he appeared on syndicated late-night talk show Arsenio Hall, where Wolff appeared as the bandleader. Wolff's life with Tourette syndrome inspired The Tic Code; he gave the score. Nat and Alex, and Wolff have two sons; the latter three performed the father and sons in The Naked Brothers Band series and film, which also featured Draper's niece Jesse as the band's babysitter. In Stella's Last Weekend, she appeared alongside her sons as their mother.

Draper, a member of the Democratic Party, voted for Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry and Barack Obama in 2004 and 2008, respectively. William Henry Draper Jr., her father and his late grandfather, were both Republicans. Phyllis, Draper's late mother, was also a mentor of former US first lady Barbara Bush's in the late 1980s; the two first met when Draper's father was heading the UN;
