Kim Hyun-joong (born 6 June 1986) is a South Korean actor, singer, and songwriter.

Kim played parts in Boys Over Flowers and Playful Kiss, Korea's first Korean solo album, and his first Japanese solo album, Unlimited in 2012.

Kim is one of South Korea's top Hallyu actors of the early 2010s thanks to his commercial success.

Early life and education

Kim Hyun-joong was born in Seoul on June 6, 1986. He referred to himself as a studious boy, but he dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. He later passed his high school exams and enrolled in Kyonggi University. Kim enrolled in Chungwoon University in 2011 to study stage production management after dropping out of university to concentrate on work.

Personal life

Kim announced his wedding with his non-celebrity girlfriend at a concert on February 27, 2022. Kim's office confirmed the news later. They married without holding a wedding reception, according to his department.

Kim made his debut as a member of SS501 on June 23, 2005, with the group's first EP, Warning, being released by DSP Media. Snow Prince's second EP, which was five months after their debut, was released in late 2005. The group quickly grew in success, winning multiple new artist awards in 2005 and 2006. SS501 debuted in Japan in 2007 with the single "Kokoro," which debuted at number five on the Oricon charts. The group was named one of only a handful of South Korean artists to win this award in January 2008.

Kim appeared on We Got Married, a reality variety show on which he was paired with singer Hwangbo in 2008. The pair, nicknamed the "Lettuce Couple," was extremely popular among viewers and received the Best Couple Award at the 2008 MBC Entertainment Awards. At the end of 2008, the show was pulled to other programs.

Kim was in his first lead-acting role in the Korean drama Boys Over Flowers in 2008. Kim received the Most Popular Actor Award at the 2009 Baeksang Arts Awards in South Korea and other Asian countries, and the Most Popular Actor Award at the 2009 Beijing International Drama Awards were highly coveted.

Kim and his Boys Over Flowers started a trend among South Korean men who imitated their "flower boy" style. Tony Moly, a cosmetics brand for whom Kim had been a spokesmodel since 2006, saw a 30 percent rise in 2009, which the company attributed to the show's success. Kim's relationship with Tony Moly ended in 2010, but he became the spokesmodel for another cosmetics company, The Face Shop, later this year.

Kim played his second lead role in a drama in 2010's Playful Kiss, a Korean translation of the Japanese shjo manga Itazura na Kiss, following the success of Boys Over Flowers. On South Korean television, the program didn't succeed, but it was an international success on international television and on online streaming platforms, helping to solidify Kim's fame as a Hallyu actor.

Kim was chosen to represent South Korea at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, where he performed the anthem "Sunshine Again" with singers from Chinese-speaking countries.

On June 7, 2011, Kim unveiled his EP Breakdown, his solo debut, on June 7, 2011. In ten days, more than 70,000 pre-ordered copies of the album were sold. The EP was the ninth best-selling album on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart, and it was awarded platinum in Taiwan. Kim's second album Lucky was released later this year. The EP debuted on Billboard's World Chart at number five, and it was the 10th best-selling album of the year in South Korea with over 100,000 copies sold.

Kim signed a multi-year contract with Universal Music Japan in November, following up on the success of a concert he appeared in Japan in June. He went on a tour of Japan, appearing in seven cities shortly after.

Kim was named Best Male Artist at the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Singapore at the end of the year. Kim released "Marry Me" on December 15, Kim's first digital single on December 15.

Kim released his first Japanese single album, "Kiss Kiss / Lucky Guy," on January 25, 2012. In May, his First Impact concert DVD sold 16,000 copies in its first week of release, occupying the top spot on the Oricon DVD Chart. This was the first time a South Korean artist had landed at number one on the charts, and it was the second time a foreign artist had landed on the top of the charts. Kim played much more aggressive boys in his first two dramas in the drama Inspiring Generation, which premiered in January 2014.

"Hot Sun," his fourth Japanese single that debuted on the Oricon weekly charts, became the first international solo artist to top the charts twice. He began his world tour in June, China, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, and Peru. Kim released Timing, his fourth Korean EP, in July.

Kim Hyun Joong's 2018 World Tour 'HAZE' began on December 2, 2017. Take My Hand, his first album from his own record label Henecia Music, was released on June 6. He then released a song named Wait For Me on September 26, which was released on September 26. On February 5, 2020, he released The Moon, The Sun, and Your Song, a full-length Japanese album that debuted at number three on the Oricon Daily Albums Chart and Number 4 on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart and Number 4 on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart. He also started a two-month (February and March) Japan tour of the same name. For the fourth time, he appeared on the front of the Korean Wave Japanese magazine Hanryu Pia on February 21.

Kim Hyun-Joong had announced on April 14, 2020, that he had decided not to renew his deal with KeyEast. Kim Hyun Joong's exclusive deal came to an end recently, according to a KeyEast State representative. "We mutually agreed to assist each other's futures rather than renewing," they said. "Kim Hyun Joong's album sales will continue through his personal label, which he established last year."
