Kenneth Tobey Life

Kenneth Jesse Tobey (March 23, 1917 – December 22, 2002) was an American stage, film, and television actor who appeared in hundreds of films during his career, including his appearances in the 1957-1960 Desilu Productions TV series Whirlybirds.

Early years

Tobey was born in Oakland, California, in 1917. Kenneth began attending the University of California, Berkeley, with the intention of working in law, but then began to dabble in acting at the school's theater. Gregory Peck, Eli Wallach, and Tony Randall were among his students at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, where he earned a drama scholarship.

Tobey served with the United States Army Air Forces in the Pacific as a rear gunner aboard a B-25 bomber during World War II. Tobey appeared on Broadway and in summer stock during the 1940s, with the exception of his time in military service. He made his Hollywood debut in the 1947 Hopalong Cassidy Western Dangerous Venture after appearing in a 1943 film short called The Man of the Ferry. He went on to appear in scores of films and on numerous television shows. He is the oblivious airbase sentry who is dressed down by General Frank Savage in the 1949 film Twelve O' Clock High (played by Gregory Peck). Tobey appeared in a brief comedy clip in another film, I Was a Male War Bride starring Cary Grant in the same year. Howard Hawks' attention was captured by his performance in that minor role, who promised to use the 32-year-old actor in something more substantial.

Personal life

Tobey married June Hutton in 1968.

Tobey died of natural causes at the age of 85 in Rancho Mirage, California.
