Career
Gaynes returned to France in 1946, but an American theater director gave him a job in a Broadway show and later in 1948, he became a United States citizen. During this period, his best-known appearances were in Wonderful Town, the musical version of My Sister Eileen. In the 1964 United States tour of My Fair Lady, Gaynes alternated between stage musicals and both comedic and dramatic performances, including Bob Baker in the Cole Porter's production of Wonderful Town (1953), Jupiter (1955), Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and Henry Higgins as Bob Baker in the Cole Porter's Out of This World (credited as George Jongejans). Gaynes portrayed Henry Warnimont, Punky Brewster's eventual foster father in the eponymous series. In addition, Henry was the voice for the show's animated Ruby-Spears version. He was behind the camera on the last episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. The Way We Were, Nickelodeon, and Tootsie were among the films in which he appeared.
Gaynes appeared in such films as The Group (1966), Marooned (1969), and Doctor's Wives (1971), among others on television and television in the early 1960s. He appeared in one episode of the sci-fi television series Sliders as the old-aged Quinn Mallory played by Jerry O'Connell.
