Career
She was the first female and youngest editor of pop magazine Smash Hits at age 22, releasing her first issue in February 1996 that chronicled the breakup of boy-band Take That. She left a year later, but the magazine's sales dropped even more. She became a Features Editor at the Sunday Times in 1997, a post she held until 2001, and also a contributing Editor for magazine Marie Claire, which she continued in 2003.
Thornton began his second career in television while working in these new editorial positions. Thornton was given her first television hosting job on the ITV current affairs program Straight Up in February 1997. On the day of her death, she was tasked with putting together a photo tribute with music for Princess Diana. Thornton said in an interview in March 2011: "...because it was Sunday, the music library was closed, and the only thing I had in my car was "Candle in the Wind," Elton John's best hits' "Candle in the Wind." Colleagues attributed the song's airplay and then re-recording to this occasion. Thornton was initially dismissed as doubtful, but later came to accept the possibility: "I never dared to assume for one minute that I was the link." But Nick Knowles (co-presenter on the show) has persuaded me that it was all down to me."
Thornton was the first host of the UK version of The X Factor. She appeared on three series of the show from 2004 to 2006 before being replaced by Dermot O'Leary. Thornton appeared on ITV's daytime series Loose Women in rotation with Andrea McLean. She appeared on 233 episodes of the show from 2009 to 2011. Carol Vorderman had her removed from her role.
Thornton was a regular stand-in host on This Morning, and she co-presented the first series of 71 Degrees North with Gethin Jones in 2010. Neither of them appeared in the second series.
