Julie Ann Gardner, MBE, (born 4 June 1969) is a Welsh television presenter.

Her most well-known work has been as executive producer on Doctor Who's 2005 revival and its spin-off series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

She worked on Doctor Who from 2003 to 2009 before heading to Los Angeles to work at BBC Worldwide.

Early life

Gardner was born in Neath and grew up in the Pont Walby area of Glynneath, where her parents owned a local store. She attended Llangatwg Comprehensive and Neath Port Talbot College, where she was an outstanding student of A Level English, History, and Drama. She studied English at Queen Mary University of London and started teaching English at Rhondda College, now part of Coleg Morgannwg, before moving to television teaching English at GCSE and A Level in the mid-1990s.

Television career

On the second production block of the acclaimed BBC Two drama series Our Friends in the North, she was working as a producer's secretary. She became a script reader and then a script editor, then a script editor, before beginning to work as a producer on BBC dramas like Silent Witness and The Mrs Bradley Mysteries.

Gardner began working as a Development Producer at London Weekend Television in 2000. Me and Mrs. Jones, an updated version of Othello written by Andrew Davies, as well as starring Eamonn Walker and Christopher Eccleston (in the Iago role). Gardner began working with Welsh writer Russell T Davies on the period drama Casanova while at LWT.

Gardner returned to the BBC in 2003 as Head of Drama for BBC Wales, bringing Davies' Casanova project with her. Gardner's first assignment from BBC Head of Drama Jane Tranter was to lead Doctor Who's revival. Gardner (who had previously expressed an interest in writing and directing Doctor Who) and began to work with him on bringing the program back to British screens. Doctor Who debuted in March 2005 received critical and critical acclaim.

Gardner was the BBC's representative in the production of The Girl in the Café (2005), written by Richard Curtis in association with the Make Poverty History campaign. Gardner at BBC Wales produced the multiple personality disorder drama May 33rd (2004); domestic violence-themed one-off Dad (2005); and courtroom reconstruction The Chatterley Affair (2006) and Life on Mars (2006), both produced independently by Kudos Film & Television; and multiple personality disorder drama The multiple personality disorder drama May 33rd (2004).

Gardner and Davies also oversaw two Doctor Who spin-offs: Torchwood, an adult (post-watershed) science fiction drama, and The Sarah Jane Adventures, a children's fantasy drama, aired on BBC One and CBBC, as well as two Doctor Who spin-offs.

Following Tranter's promotion to the new "Head of Fiction" position, it was announced in September 2006 that Gardner will replace Jane Tranter as the overall Controller of Drama Commissioning at BBC Television. Gardner, on the other hand, remained in her position at BBC Wales, doing both jobs concurrently until 2009; however, producer Piers Wenger assumed her duties at BBC Wales and Doctor Who.

Gardner was praised for an increase in drama in Wales; in 2007, Cardiff-born writer Andrew Davies called her "the best thing to happen to Welsh drama." "It's been a long time."

Gardner was confirmed as executive producer in charge of scripted projects in March 2009 and joined the Los Angeles-based BBC Worldwide America staff as executive producer in charge of scripted projects.

Gardner was five months pregnant and her first child, Huckleberry, was born in early summer 2010.

Gardner co-founded Bad Wolf with Jane Tranter in 2015. Since being a young boy, Bad Wolf has produced numerous television series, including The Night Of, His Dark Materials, and Industry.
