Early career
Burnett immigrated to the United States in October 1982, where his buddy Nick Hill, who had emigrated from the United Kingdom earlier, was working as a nanny and chauffeur. Hill heard of a waiting job for a live-in nanny with the Jaeger family in upscale Beverly Hills. Despite not having no expertise as a nanny, Burnett continued to talk during the interview. The Jaegers knew the benefits of having a nanny and security at the same time, and hired him. After a year of serving with the Jaegers, he moved to Malibu, California, where he was caring for two boys for $250 a week. He was eventually hired in the boys' insurance company, which was owned by the boys' parent. Burnett rented a portion of a fence at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, and sold T-shirts for $18 per week during weekends. He quit his insurance company after realizing he earned more money selling T-shirts.
Burnett and four others took part in the Raid Gauloises, a French adventure competition. Burnett missed out on a business opportunity by staging similar competitions later in the year.
