Julia Cumming Life

Julia Rachel Cumming (born January 16, 1996) is an American singer-songwriter who plays frontwoman and bass player with the Brooklyn-based band Sunflower Bean.

Cumming models occasionally, has modeled for several well-known designers and appeared in global campaigns for H&M and Diesel.

Cumming is also a social activist and is active in the Model Alliance.

She has produced and directed a video starring her fellow models, urging young people to become politically aware.

Early life

Cumming was born in Manhattan to Alec Cumming and Cynthia Harden, who (at the time) were a creative partnership as well as a marital one - writing, performing, and releasing songs in the alternative pop band Bite The Wax Godhead (1990-1998). Julia grew up in Manhattan's East Village, attended New York City public schools, and formed Supercute! In 2009, June Lei and Rachel Trachtenburg (of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players) arrived together with their neighborhood friends. Supercute!, a bubblegum-girl-group-psychedelic-pop blend, was born (in Cumming's words) "ukulele rock operas"; the band lasted until 2013, with Cumming and Trachtenburg as their creative center. Julia told the New Musical Express in 2016 that "it was almost an art project about not letting your age or being a girl discourage you from doing something." Cumming and Trachtenburg also co-hosted a talk show on the Progressive Radio Network (Pure Imagination, 2011-2013), aimed at assisting fellow teenagers in art and political activities.

Cumming made her acting debut in the film "People Don't Know Me" and appeared in live concerts at local clubs in 2014. She has also interned at the Museum of Modern Art, where she curated an off-site exhibit of instagram art. She met choreographer Dean Moss, who portrayed her in his debut in his dance piece johnbrown, which debuted at The Kitchen on October 16, 2014.

Julia Cumming Career

Modeling career

Despite the fact that Cumming had done occasional modeling jobs in the Supercute! In February 2014, her fashion career was revived as she was invited to walk in Yves Saint Laurent's Ready to Wear Fall Winter 2014 exhibition in Paris. Hedi Slimane, Saint Laurent's creative director, has signed the singer to an exclusive modeling deal, utilizing her in three campaigns and in six shows; Cumming was often referred to as "Hedi Slimane's muse" in the press at the time.

Since then, she has been modeling for Anna Sui, Elsa Schiaparelli, Max Mara, Rochas, and Fausto Puglisi, as well as in numerous fashion publications, most notably in many of Vogue's international editions (USA, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Japan), and Australia. In March 2017, Cumming appeared alongside Madonna for Vogue Germany in the news-making film and photo spread "Her Story," which was released on International Women's Day 2017.
