He has competed for Samoa and Australia on an international basis.

Playing career

McGuire competed for Queensland under-17s and under-19s in 2007. He played for Queensland under the age of 18 in 2008. McGuire played for the Brisbane Broncos Under 20's from 2008-2010, appearing in 29 games and scoring 11 tries.

In Brisbane's 26–10 victory at Mt Smart Stadium, McGuire made his NRL debut against the New Zealand Warriors while playing off the interchange bench. McGuire scored his first NRL try in Brisbane's 30–10 victory at Suncorp Stadium in Round 22 against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. McGuire's rookie year in the NRL saw him play in 14 games and scoring two times.

McGuire appeared in 14 matches for the Brisbane club in 2010. On October 16th, he made his first appearance for Samoa against New Zealand.

McGuire sustained a serious eye injury while being accidentally poked by teammate Mitchell Dodds, and he was forced to go to the hospital with heavy bleeding. McGuire was back for the Brisbane club in Round 17 against the Parramatta Eels later this week. McGuire made it to an end last year with 18 appearances. He was chosen in the Australian Kangaroos train-on squad but was later disqualified due to eligibility issues while playing for Samoa. McGuire re-signed with Brisbane for three more seasons on October 26th.

McGuire scored his first attempt for Brisbane since round 23 of 2009. In Game 2 of the 2012 State of Origins series, he was named as the 18th man for Queensland. McGuire was playing off the interchange bench against Papua New Guinea on September 23rd, winning 24–18 at Port Moresby.

In 2013, McGuire scored just one try out of 19 matches.

McGuire played his 100th NRL match against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in Round 12, beating Suncorp Stadium 36–10. In Game 3 of the 2014 State of Origins series, he was selected as the 18th man for Queensland. McGuire was active in 24 games and scoring two tries during the regular season. McGuire was selected in the Samoan 24-man squad for the Four Nations series on October 7th, while he was in the Prime Minister's XIII squad. McGuire will play in all three matches of the tournament, beginning at hooker in two of the test matches after meeting his obligations with the PM's XIII. McGuire went blind in his left eye after suffering a detached retina from the eye-poke that had him sidelined in 2011.

McGuire re-signed with Brisbane on January 23rd, marking the end of the 2017 season. McGuire played for Samoa against Tonga in the 2015 Polynesian Cup on May 2nd. In Game 1 of the 2015 State of Origin series, McGuire made his long-awaited State of Origin debut for Queensland, playing off the interchange bench in the 11–10 win at ANZ Stadium on May 27. McGuire was also playing in Game 2 of the season before suffering with a season-end Achilles tendon injury against the Newcastle Knights in Round 16. McGuire was unfortunately sidelined for the remainder of the season, where he watched his team make it to the grand finals. McGuire's career saw him win two tries out of 13 matches.

McGuire returned to the Broncos team from injury in the 17–4 victory in the season's first match against the Parramatta Eels. McGuire made his international debut for Australia against New Zealand in the 2016 Anzac Test on Friday, playing off the interchange bench in the 16–0 victory over Hunter Stadium. McGuire appeared in all three Queensland games, including starting at prop in Game 2 where the Maroons defeated 26-16 at Suncorp Stadium in Game 2. McGuire wrote a tweet about the victory after the series of matches, mocking New South Wales' "Losers have meetings, winners have parties." Funaki retaliated against McGuire's overzealous tackle at McGuire on September 13th, but was quickly broken up by other players. McGuire lost his 150th NRL game against the North Queensland side in the season's final 26-20 golden point extra time loss. McGuire played in 24 matches for Brisbane, ending the season. McGuire was drafted into the Australia Kangaroos Four Nations train-on team but didn't make it to the final squad, but didn't make it to the final squad.

McGuire extended his deal with the Brisbane club until the 2021 season, which was set to begin on March 9, 2017. McGuire played for Samoa in the Test against England against England on May 6, 2017, beginning at lock in the 30–10 loss at Campbelltown Stadium. McGuire was involved in all three games, beginning at lock, replacing the injured Corey Parker, and had a good run in Game 2 against NSW's Josh Jackson in a 18-16 victorious side. McGuire played 19 games for Brisbane in 2018, with 17 games on lock and two on hooker. In Queensland's series of losses to New South Wales, he started three games on lock, while Australia's two games on lock began in October.

McGuire was released from the final three years of his Brisbane contract to the North Queensland Cowboys on a four-year contract on September 19th.

McGuire made his debut for North Queensland in Round 1 of the 2019 NRL season in Round 1, beating the St. George Illawarra Dragons by 24–12. He played his 200th NRL game in North Queensland's 17-10 victory over the Warriors in Round 6.

McGuire's 2019 was marred by on-field incidents despite his good form for his new club. In Round 5, he avoided suspension for an alleged eye gouge on Queensland and Australian teammate Cameron Munster. Following the incident, Munster has declined to lodge a complaint with referees. McGuire was charged with grade one wrong conduct and fined $3550.

He was charged with another hand in the face of Dylan Walker after losing to the Manly Sea Eagles in Round 13. He was allowed to be suspended after receiving a $4500 fine. During the 2019 State of Origins tournament, James Maloney was suspended for one week after suffering a late blow on him. McGuire was charged with sticking his hands in the face of an enemy again in North Queensland's Round 21 loss to the Brisbane Broncos, this time Brisbane's David Fifita, who was suspended for three weeks.

Cameron Smith was charged for a trip to North Queensland for the season's last game, a loss to the Melbourne Storm. He was early guilty and received a one-game suspension.

McGuire was a member of the Cowboys' 2020 NRL Nines winning team in February. In a victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, he appeared in the team's first three games before injuring his knee.

McGuire missed Round 1 of the 2020 NRL season due to his return from the previous season, but the Canterbury Bulldogs defeated North Queensland 24–16. Both owing to suspension, he missed two more games in 2020. Cade Cust, a half of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, was suspended for one game after a crushing collision on Manly-Warringah's half Cade Cust in Round 11. He was jailed for opposition by referee Grant Atkins in Round 18 and was later fined and suspended for one week.

McGuire received the Players' Player award at North Queensland on October 3rd.

McGuire will immediately transfer to the St George Illawarra Dragons and remain at the club until 2022, according to the team's announcement on April 13th.

McGuire won his first game of the season in round 9 of the 2021 NRL season, defeating Canterbury-Bankstown 32-12. McGuire had been involved in eight previous tragedies, four of which occurred with both North Queensland and St. George Illawarra.

During McGuire's 44-18 loss to Melbourne, the club was sent to the sin bin. McGuire was suspended for five matches in connection with the sin bin offence on May 17th.

McGuire was fined $12,000 by the NRL and suspended for one game for one game after violating the game's Covid-19 biosecurity rules while attending a party with 12 other St. George Il lawarra players at Paul Vaughan's house on July 5th.

McGuire was sent to the penalty binge during the club's loss against South Sydney in the third round of the regular season. McGuire was suspended for five matches in connection with the incident this week.

McGuire signed a two-year contract with Warrington's English side, beginning in 2023.
