Joseph R. Gannascoli (born February 15, 1959) is an American actor best known for his role as Vito Spatafore on HBO's The Sopranos.

Gannascoli was a competent chef before appearing.

Early life

Gannascoli was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended St. John's University for two years, majoring in communications. He began his culinary career at Manhattan Market in 1981, before heading to Commander's Palace in New Orleans and then to various restaurants around the country.

Career

In Brooklyn, Gannascoli discovered culinary art and opened Soup As Art Restaurant. He has worked in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and New York, though he dabbled in acting at the time.

Benicio del Toro's "big break" in acting, according to Gannascoli, who appeared on Money for Nothing, he got his "big break" in acting. Del Toro later played Gannascoli in his directorial debut, Submission, after appearing in Ed Wood. He also introduced him to Sheila Jaffe and Georgianne Walken, who did casting work for HBO's The Sopranos.

In the season one episode "The Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti," Gannascoli appeared in films including Mickey Blue Eyes and television shows including Law and Order before appearing on The Sopranos as a pastry shop patron named "Gino." In the season two episode "The Happy Wanderer," Richie Aprile, Vito Spatafore's nephew, he later received a recurring role. It was one of the three times that the show used a single actor for separate roles, with Dan Grimaldi, Patsy and Phillip "Philly Spoons" in Parisi and Saundra Santiago playing identical twins Jeannie and Joannie Cusamano. Gannascoli was promoted to a series regular ahead of the start of Season 6. In a book titled Murder Machine, Gannascoli suggested to the writers that his character be made gay from a true tale of the Gambino crime family.

After appearing in other films, including Men in Black III, Gannascoli appeared in Men in Black III. He appears in the film An Act of War, a 2015 war documentary.

He appeared on an episode of Bong Appétit: Cook Off in 2019, which was focused on cannabis-themed competition cooking. On January 21, 2020, he appeared alongside Vincent Pastore on Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back.

In the pilot episode of "Bring on the Dancing Horses" with Kate Bosworth, Gannascoli is scheduled to appear.

In January 2006, Gannascoli published A Meal to Die For: A Culinary Novel of Crime.
