High school career

The 2005 New York state public high school and federation championships were won by Flynn and Niagara Falls High School. Following his senior year, he was also named Mr. Basketball of New York City. He was ranked No. 1 when he entered the class of 2007 as the No. 1 in the country. Overall, 22 candidates have been recruited, with No. 2 being the top pick. Flynn, a 2007 McDonald's All-American, was a member of the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team that competed against the World Select Team in the 10th annual Nike Hoop Summit in Memphis, Tennessee. Flynn was a former high school and college teammate of guard/forward Paul Harris, who competed with the Minnesota Timberwolves as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves' summer league team. Flynn averaged 26.7 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 steals, and 3.3 rebounds in his senior year.

College career

Flynn scored 28 points in his first game ever on November 12, 2007, surpassing former Orange standout Carmelo Anthony's record for most points in a freshman's debut. In an 82–78 loss to Pittsburgh on March 21, 2008, he matched his debut appearance with another 28-point effort in his 82–77 loss to Pittsburgh. Flynn is expected to have a good freshman season, earning co-Big East Rookie of the Year awards with averages of 15.7 points and 5.3 assists per game. Flynn and Donté Greene, both freshman, were the country's second-best scoring freshman pair, combining to average 33.4 points per outing.

Flynn was named to the preseason All Big East squad and began the season with a 27-point victory over Richmond on November 18, 2008. Syracuse defeated then-No. Flynn scored 25 points and hit a 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds remaining in regulation seven days later. No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 1 is the best in the world today. In overtime, the 89-81 AP Kansas 89–81 in the CBE Classic championship game. Flynn was voted MVP of the Tournament.

In a January 11, 2009, game against Rutgers, Flynn's leaping skills were on display. Flynn hopped to the hoop and threw a monstrous dunk over Rutgers guard Michael Rosario as he attempted to plead guilty.

Flynn led Orange to a 127-117 victory in six overtimes over the favored University of Connecticut Huskies in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big East tournament on March 12 and 13. That evening, Flynn led the Orange by scoring 34 points, adding 11 assists, and making all 16 of his free throw attempts. Flynn continued to play all 45 minutes of Syracuse's 74-69 overtime victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Big East semifinals the next day. He scored 15 points and had 9 assists. Syracuse, on the other hand, would ultimately lose 76–66 in the Big East championship game. Flynn was named the 2009 Big East tournament's MVP for his efforts, marking the fourth player from the losing team to win the award in the tournament's history.

Flynn led all scorers in their first round match against Stephen F. Austin, scoring 16 points and 7 assists in his first NCAA tournament game since 2009. Syracuse took the game 59–44. Syracuse defeated Arizona State 78-67, winning Syracuse's first Sweet Sixteen since 2004. Flynn will score 11 points and 7 assists on March 22, 2009.

Flynn was confirmed by Syracuse University on April 9 that he would be eligible for the 2009 NBA draft. Flynn, on the other hand, will maintain his NCAA status by not recruiting an agent right away. On April 15, Flynn officially decided to postpone his remaining two years at Syracuse and sign with Creative Artists Agency Sports, which is owned by agent Leon Rose. In the 2009 NBA draft, he was drafted sixth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Professional career

In the 2009 NBA draft, the Flynns were drafted sixth overall, ahead of future two-time MVP Stephen Curry in the point guard role. Flynn was seen as the future center guard for the Timberwolves by GM David Kahn, so he was very high. Flynn's numbers for his rookie season were solid: he averaged 13.5 points per game and 4.4 assists per game.

Flynn made his professional debut on October 28, 2009, sparked a rise for the Timberwolves after falling 19 points down. In the 4th quarter, Flynn scored 13 points, leading the Timberwolves to victory over the New Jersey Nets. He made the winning layup to beat the Utah Jazz 110-108 on December 14, 2009, earning 28 points.

In a 108-103 overtime victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on January 18, 2010, he set a new career record of 29 points against the Philadelphia 76ers, setting a new record record of 29 points against them. Flynn was selected to the All-Rookie second team at the end of the season. In an 112–91 victory over the New York Knicks on January 31, 2010 Flynn had a career high 8 rebounds.

In the summer of 2010, Flynn underwent hip surgery. Flynn's decline in both production and play as a result of the procedure. His 2010–11 campaign was widely regarded as a disappointment, with his numbers falling to 5.3 points per game and only 3.4 assists per game. Following the season, there was a lot of rumors surrounding his departure.

In a 116-105 victory over the Detroit Pistons on March 2, 2011, the Flynn dropped a career high 14 assists.

Flynn was traded to the Houston Rockets alongside Donatas Motiejnas in exchange for Brad Miller, the draft's number 23 and 38 picks, as well as a future first-round draft pick. Nikola Miroti was the number 23 pick, and Chandler Parsons were the number 38 pick.

Flynn signed with the Detroit Pistons on October 1, 2012. The Pistons waived Flynn's privilege on October 22, 2012.

Flynn signed with the Melbourne Tigers of the Australian National Basketball League on November 5, 2012. Flynn was unstoppable in his first game in the NBL, and after just a few days of preparation, leading the struggling Tigers to a 96–66 victory over Adelaide 36ers.

Flynn's inability on the NBL in the 2012 NBL All-Star Game, held at the Adelaide Arena, on December 22, 2012. Following Kevin Lisch's injury, the South All-Stars' replacement starting point guard was chosen as the replacement starting point guard for the South All-Stars. Flynn had seven points, five rebounds, and ten assists in 19:56 minutes of game time.

Flynn joined the Indiana Pacers in the 2013 Orlando Summer League. He then joined the Los Angeles Clippers for the Las Vegas Summer League.

Flynn left the NBA and never returned after the 2013 NBA Summer League ended.

Flynn joined the Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association in September 2013. However, he returned a month later due to injury.

Flynn signed with Orlandina Basket of Italy on August 30, 2014, the 2014–15 season. He left Orlandina on November 24, 2014 after playing only two games in Serie A before getting injured.

National team career

Flynn was named as a member of the 2006 USA Men's U18 National Team in San Antonio, Texas, on June 26, 2006. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, a team-high 5.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game throughout the tournament.

In the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championships, Flynn will compete on Team USA once more. In the United States' nine games, the team earned the silver medal after scoring 9.6 points per game.
