It was 54 days before his 17th birthday, smashing the previous record set by Peter Reeves, who was 17 years and 100 days old when he scored against Norwich in May 1996. Shelvey was let loose in a goalless draw at Everton on November 1st by receiving two bookings. In the 24th minute, he kicked the ball away in the 24th minute and then blocked James McCarthy's run, resulting in the second booking. During a 4–1 home loss, he caught Liverpool's Emre Can with his arm. Although referee Andre Marriner did not sanction him for it, the Football Association later suspended Shelvey for violent conduct, with one match suspended due to his previous demotion against Everton. He denied that the offence was intentional and personally apologized to Can. Shelvey's disciplinary record was criticized the day before the game, prompting him to "wise up" and put an end to an accumulation of yellow cards earned by "laziness."

Shelvey signed a new, four-year contract with the Swans in July 2015, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2019.

Shelvey appeared to become embroiled in a controversy with one Swansea fan and then proceeded to invite him outside on Monday. "We expect more from Jonjo, it is as simple as that," manager Alan Curtis said.

Newcastle United announced on January 12, 2016 that they had signed Shelvey on a five-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of £12 million. Shelvey scored his first game of the season on matchday two of the 2019-20 Premier League season, with a right footed shot into the far corner of the six-yard box in a 3–1 loss to Norwich City. International career

As England defeated the 2006 Victory Shield scoring three goals in three matches, Shelvey captained the England under-16s. Following his senior international debut, England boss Roy Hodgson said Shelvey missed the 2015 European Under-21 Championship because he was "reticent" about playing at that level. Shelvey replied by claiming that he had been told by under-21 manager Gareth Southgate that he did not participate in the team and that if he had ever refused international service he would have been punished.

Shelvey was eligible to play for Scotland, through his grandfather, and the Republic of Ireland, but she chose England to represent England. Shelvey was called up to the England squad for two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland in October 2012, making his senior debut from the bench against San Marino and Poland, beating Michael Carrick in the 66th minute.

Shelvey was selected to start for England against San Marino for the first time when playing for Swansea City. In Serravalle, England defeated Serravalle 6–0 winners, and he was named man of the match by the BBC.
