Jonathan Luke Ke Huy Quan (born August 20, 1971) is a Vietnamese-American actor and stunt choreographer of Han Chinese descent.
He is best known for his appearances in Indiana Jones' 1980s Steven Spielberg films The Temple of Doom and The Goonies.
Early life and education
Quan was born in Saigon, South Vietnam, on August 20, 1971 (present-day Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), to Vietnamese parents of Hoa descent. He has eight siblings.
His family immigrated to Vietnam in 1978. He, his father, and five siblings arrived in a Hong Kong refugee camp, while his mother and three other siblings fled to Malaysia. In 1979, his whole family immigrated to the United States.
Quan attended Mount Gleason Junior High School in Tujunga, California, and Alhambra High School in Alhambra, California. Quan graduated from the University of California's School of Cinematic Arts in 1999. He worked with Hong Kong's fight choreographer Corey Yuen on several projects after graduating.
Personal life
Quan is fluent in English, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Mandarin. He is a Vietnamese-American of Han Chinese origins (particularly from the Chinese Hoa ethnic group in Vietnam). Quan is married and resides in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Jeff Cohen, the Goonies' costar, is still close friends with him, and he is also Quan's entertainment counsel.
Career
Quan first performed in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as Harrison Ford's sidekick Short Round. The casting director auditioned children at Castelar Elementary School, which also included his younger brother.
Quan appeared in The Goonies as a member of the eponymous group of children led by entrepreneur Richard "Data" Wang in 1985. In the 1986 Taiwanese film It Takes a Pickpocket orphanage, he appeared as a pickpocket orphan. He appeared in Passengers (Passenj Sugisarishi Hibi) with Japanese idol singer Honda Minako in 1987. Sam was on the short-lived TV series Together We Stand (1986–1987) and played Jasper Kwong in the sitcom Head of the Class from 1990 to 1991.
He appeared in the film Breathing Fire (1991) and was briefly involved in Encino Man (1992). He appeared in the 1993 Mandarin language television series The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter, which lasted for forty episodes. He appeared in the 1996 Hong Kong/Vietnam co-production Red Pirate.
Quan trained under Taekwondo under Philip Tan on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Quan found it difficult to find acting jobs in the United States as an adult. He departed from acting and enrolled in the University of Southern California's film program. Quan was asked by Corey Yuen to help choreograph fighting sequences in X-Men (2000) after graduating from high school. He worked on various Asian and US manufacturing companies for the next decade.
For The One (2001), he worked with Yuen as a stunt choreographer. Quan served as assistant director on Wong Kar Wai's 2046 (2004).
Quan was inspired by Crazy Rich Asians (2018)'s success in 2018 to return to acting. The Daniels began casting for their film Everything Everywhere At Once (2022). They had trouble casting Waymond Wang, who would appear in the film as three distinct characters. On Twitter, co-director Daniel Kwan discovered Quan. Quan was called on to audition for the film two weeks after being hired by a talent agent. Quan's role in Netflix's Finding Ohana (2021) was released in September 2019. Quan approached director Jude Weng after overhearing her that the film was titled The Goonies Meet Indiana Jones, both of which Quan had appeared in.
Quan was confirmed as a cast member of Everything Everywhere All At Once in January 2020. The film was released in March 2022 to critical acclaim, with Quan's role receiving acclaim and media attention.
It was revealed in February 2022 that he had appeared in the cast of American Born Chinese's television adaptation for Disney+.
